My thoughts continue to be with all the people and wildlife impacted by the devastating fires in the Los Angeles areas. Western Municipal Water District stands firmly in solidarity with the dedicated firefighters and water agencies working tirelessly to protect our communities. As we remain committed to keeping our water resources available during this critical time, it is important to understand that local water systems are designed to reliably provide water for everyday needs and effectively support local firefighting efforts in typical emergencies such as a single house fire. No local water system can single-handedly address the immense demands of a wildfire like the #PalisadesFire and #EatonFire that requires thousands of personnel, equipment and aerial resources. Understanding these limits helps us better plan and prepare as a community. Western Municipal Water District is committed to ensuring our infrastructure is as resilient and reliable as possible to support our communities during emergencies. This includes: - Regular maintenance of hydrants, reservoirs, and backup systems to ensure they function at peak capacity. - Investing in storage tanks, pump stations, and strategically placed infrastructure to maintain water pressure and flow. - Collaborating with local fire departments to safeguard and optimize water delivery and resource allocation during fire events. The strategic use of aerial retardant drops has been instrumental in slowing the fire's advance, highlighting the vital role of technology and innovation in modern firefighting efforts. As the skies cleared over nearby Santa Clarita, the visible absence of smoke provided a temporary reprieve for residents, yet the looming threat of further wind-driven spread remains a pressing concern. The potential evacuation of thousands of inmates from the Castaic jail complex illustrates the multifaceted challenges posed by such large-scale emergencies. The Laguna fire, which ignited in Ventura County, adds to the compounding stress on firefighting resources and local communities already reeling from weeks of historic fires. There's a great article today in the Los Angeles Times about the #LAFires: https://lnkd.in/eN9WGqH4 It's becoming increasingly clear that these fires were, unfortunately, inevitable. While wooden houses may offer better earthquake resistance, that doesn't mean they're fireproof. One big question moving forward is whether insurance companies will continue to cover wood-frame homes after the #LAFires. I understand why wood is popular—it's affordable, and homeowners can add extensions or make improvements with relatively little expertise or specialized tools. Personally, I love wood—my own tiny house is made of it. But I do believe that Los Angeles City Planning should consider incorporating a street of stone houses as fire barriers every quarter mile. It's time for new housing regulations in LA to address these growing concerns. My thoughts are with the victims of the #LAFires

Los Angeles Wildfires Threaten Landmarks, Displace Thousands; Economic Damage Estimated at Up to $150 Billion.: Firefighters in Los Angeles are battling severe wildfires, with strong winds threatening to exacerbate the situation. The fires, particularly the Palisades Fire, pose a significant risk to landmarks such as the J. Paul Getty Museum and UCLA. Evacuation orders have displaced tens of thousands, and the fires have destroyed over 12,000 structures, including homes and businesses. The economic damage is estimated between $135 billion and $150 billion. Leadership failures and resource shortages, like insufficient water supply, have been criticized. The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors is also working to eliminate red tape to make rebuilding as seamless as possible. It's all over the news—California is on fire. Wildfires fueled by powerful winds and dry conditions continue to devastate Southern California, tearing through the state. Thousands of homes, commercial buildings, and vehicles have been damaged or destroyed. Palisades Fire: Sparked Tuesday morning in Pacific Palisades, east of Malibu. It has scorched 19,978 acres as of Thursday evening and is 6% contained. Eaton Fire: Ignited Tuesday night in national forest lands north of downtown Los Angeles. It has consumed 13,690 acres and is 0% contained, with up to 5,000 structures at risk. Hurst Fire: Began Tuesday night in Sylmar and grew to 771 acres by Thursday night, with 37% containment. Lidia Fire: Started Wednesday afternoon near Acton and reached 394 acres by Thursday night, with 75% containment. Kenneth Fire: Broke out Thursday evening in Woodland Hills, covering 960 acres. While it is 0% contained, forward progress has been halted. Sunset Fire: Sparked in Hollywood Hills near Runyon Canyon Wednesday evening.
