I couldn’t agree more with Will Guidara’s take on ‘unreasonable hospitality.’ My marketing journey actually began in the restaurant industry, where I discovered the indelible power of creating meaningful experiences. After years of working in restaurants and bars during college and grad school, I transitioned that experience into marketing—but that drive and love for delivering extraordinary moments never left me. It reminds me of an early episode of How I Built This with Guy Raz, where Airbnb founders talked about their disruptive approach to travel. I still think about their concept of ‘10-star service’—going beyond expectations, not just meeting them. This relentless pursuit of excellence became their North Star, challenging long-standing norms in hospitality. It got me thinking: what if we applied that mindset to every aspect of our work? What would 10-star meetings look like? How can our customer service or project management achieve 10-star status? The power of connection…

Wish the new “online everything” culture of most businesses and education understood this and stopped relegating customer/tech service to bots and AI, it’s wholly frustrating to see the human interaction element being removed, the same with the grocery stores and the self-service checkout system… going to the grocery store used to be the next best thing to going to an actual outdoor market… you got to know your butcher, the server in the deli and bakery and your cashiers, those service people also knew where you could find the items you were searching for… even personal shoppers like those on Instacart or DoorDash or UberEats have no concept of this, quite often you never get what you order because they don’t double-check the order or have no idea where to find the items you ordered or even how to select fresh produce or edible items. It’s simple things like this that drive so many to frustration and drive them to become more hermit-like.

If there's one thing I've learned from working in hospitality, it's that people want to feel special Remembering people's names, what they like, or what they've said, makes them feel seen. Everyone has different needs and desires, and learning how to read them is a skill. In an age of AI and over-automation, the real impact comes from the small things. The ones that can't be automated. The ones that can't be scaled. Real impact lies in the things that turn a standard experience into something deeply tailored and personalized. Recognizing that this applies to EVERY industry and business, is true leverage

As educators, we have so much to learn from this. Our purpose is to help young people learn and grow, but that is impacted largely by how we make them feel. Imagine if our reason for being were the same as restaurants - to make people feel seen, feel welcome, and to give them a sense of belonging. We are in the service industry whether we label it that or not, and there’s nothing more special than serving the young people in our care so they are empowered to leave our schools hungry for more, and caring enough to share their gifts with others.
