Honoured to have my words next to writers I so admire, including Michelle Cyca, Harrison Mooney, Christopher Cheung, andrea bennett and Colleen Kimmett, in the Tyee's new book.
My chapter is about how a residential school survivor, Gina Laing, is healing from trauma through small acts of resistance in her daily tasks. You can read the piece here: https://lnkd.in/gKD_W9jg

I'm excited to share part 2 of the incredible review of "Can You Hear Me?" by Martin Vito, aka King Vito Speaks. Martin continues to highlight the importance of multi-generational conversations sparked by this book.
He beautifully explains how "Can You Hear Me?" can open eyes and hearts. Mums might start seeing their children through a new lens, and young people might understand their parents' journey to get here. This book fosters a dialogue where both sides can express their needs with mutual respect and honour.
Imagine young people articulating their needs, parents genuinely listening, and communities thriving. It's more than just about jobs or money; it's about the love we share and the support we offer one another. If it takes a village to raise a child, we must ensure that every child feels valued and heard, so they too can contribute to the village.
Books like "Can You Hear Me?" provide hope and a platform for these essential conversations. They aren't the final answer but a step towards finding solutions together. Let's keep this dialogue going and build stronger, more understanding communities.

To paraphrase Nora Bateson, building community requires communing. Obvious, right? These days, it’s not.
Remote/hybrid working means that we spend most of our time with the people who are *immediately* relevant to our projects. Everybody else is pretty much out of frame.
To “commune” with them, we first need to schedule a call — something we didn’t have to do when we walked the common ground of our office buildings and ran into each other in the elevators, corridors, bathrooms, or break rooms.
Isolation, my friends, is real.
That’s why summer book clubs can be such a balm. Even if they happen via video conference, you’ve got three essential ingredients of community:
* shared purpose;
* a sincere invitation to engage; and
* freedom to interpret what the book says so that your individuality (i.e. your particular interpretation) lives alongside community.
Now, let’s up the ante in this, ahem, noisy political year. Say your club chooses a book about how to navigate our differences — be they ideological, religious, cultural, whatever. In that case, your experience of communing can have a meta-magic to it. The video below reveals what I mean.👇🏽
Book-clubbing is about so much more than reading. It’s about being in relationship with an environment that values curiosity: yours and everybody else’s. It's what democracy can be again.
