📢 Innovative approaches in rail embankment monitoring 📢 🚨 Why is this needed, and why should it be widely deployed across the UK Rail Network? 🚨 In just the last 4 weeks: BBC News 01/12: "Train passengers are being advised to avoid travelling next week due to emergency works to repair a landslip. Services will be significantly reduced between Woking and Basingstoke from Friday 8 December to Sunday 10 December - affecting routes to Salisbury, Southampton and Bournemouth - Network Rail said." RailFreight.com 28/11: "A call to Network Rail’s response unit on the afternoon of Monday, 27 November, sounded the alarm for the Midland Main Line. A passing express driver vigilantly notified the infrastructure manager of an unexpected movement on the embankments that run up to the Dronfield Viaduct, which resembled a landslip. Network Rail responded rapidly, and after inspecting the line, it opened it up to traffic just in time to avoid delays during the evening rush." The Independent 14/11: A landslip between Darlington and Newcastle has been delaying operations on the East Coast main line for several days. One of the two tracks is closed, with long delays expected as northbound and southbound trains share the same line. National Rail reports: “Disruption is expected for the rest of the day.”" Yorkshire Live 10/11: "Disruption along the rail line between Huddersfield and Leeds will be impacting many people's journeys today following a landslide. National Rail has reported all services between Huddersfield and Leeds face disruption. The landslip is between Dewsbury and Ravenshorpe, meaning some lines towards Huddersfield and Brighouse are blocked." Leicestershire Live 6/11: East Midlands Railway has announced big changes to the timetable for the first three days of this week. The Port of Long Beach’s Pier B Rail Support Yard project was announced last year. This past September a meeting was held on the projects status. The Pier B RSY may not be the remedy that POLB needs. You’ll now be performing switching twice.. Once on the dock, with more switching to assemble trains at PBRSY.. Not only will this tack on additional switching cost. Is PBRSY even needed at this point?.. The project appears to be a poor replacement for BNSF's indefinitely suspended SCIG (Southern California International Gateway).. Time will tell, but this may just end up being an expensive bottleneck that doesn’t “streamline” rail movement.. In fact it will convolute it..

Paul Berger at The Wall Street Journal gets all the fun jobs--here he tells the story of how barge traffic of partially treated sludge (one of many euphemisms in the sewage treatment business) along the Hackensack River (reminding me of the Fountains of Wayne song about the town not the river https://lnkd.in/e7t5h4VQ) may be impeded by the reconstructed Portal North Bridge, one of the major passenger rail projects into NYC generally referred to as the Gateway Project (https://lnkd.in/eG7ctmNs). The bridge will be taller than its current height but not tall enough for the tugs now pushing these barges. The U.S. Coast Guard signed off on the bridge re-design back in 2013 and environmental reviews of the project concluded that the increased bridge height was intended to accommodate marine traffic without needing a moveable structure. Perhaps the tugs pushing these barges today are higher than those previously used in barging sludge from one treatment plant to another along the river. Up to now, the primary interaction of the USCG has been to reduce periods of bridge deployment to speed movement of the 450 trains a day on this structure. The story of a rail-marine height conflict is similar to highway bridge height issues raised in many state freight plans, making sure that highway corridors designated as primary freight routes have roadway and railroad bridges with sufficient vertical clearances to clear most truck traffic. It highlights the need for freight stakeholders to be engaged in public agency infrastructure planning and for public agencies to seek freight industry input into their plans. #freight #barges #bridgeengineering

Opened in 1961, when bridges were constructed for a 50-year lifespan, the I-5 Bridge over Columbia River is long overdue for a replacement. Ever wondered what a 'track possession' is? 🤔 We keep talking about them, so figured we should explain. It's when a section of railway is temporarily closed to allow teams to work efficiently and safely within the rail corridor. 🦺🔨This typically involves rail maintenance, but we made use of two track possessions recently to get some major construction work completed. Closures usually last 60-72 hours, with crews working around the clock to power through the work, but can last for over 100 hours for the really big jobs! 🤯 Track possessions require next-level planning to ensure all bases are covered, so the work can be undertaken safely and efficiently within a short window of opportunity. 🚂A fitting tribute to our MD's Webinar about Slope Stability Monitoring on the Rail Network this afternoon at 2pm!🚂 We happened across 'Clun Castle' on our #SurveyAdventures yesterday - it was a real #FrancisBourgeois experience 🤗 Something to reflect upon is that the Clun Castle steam locomotive was built in 1950, when most of the rail network was already over 77 years old. It is now over 150 years old and maintainance of this aging infrastructure is a huge challenge for Network Rail. Today's webinar is focussing on just one method of monitoring - Slope Stability. However, there are many ways we can provide monitoring data in the rail environment that dramatically improves the information available to better focus squeezed budget expendature.
