This new CSS publication is making waves🌊: "Comparing the carbon footprints of urban and conventional agriculture"🌱 On average, #urbanfarms in this study were found to have a higher #carbonfootprint per unit of produce than #conventionalagriculture - driven in large part by the carbon cost of infrastructure like raised beds and supplies, allocated to relatively low output and sometimes only used for a few years. But some #gardens were extremely efficient and teach us about #bestpractices for #climate-friendly urban gardening, such as using #reclaimed and #upcycled materials and growing foods that offset carbon-intensive conventional produce🍅. Project 6 - 2023: Australian Plants Society NSW: Online Native Plant Profile Database: https://lnkd.in/gd-4z7C I like to repeatedly promote this labour-of-love and purely volunteer project which I chip away at every week. Everyone should have a volunteer activity right? (although I think we feel it is harder and harder these days). On this database, are detailed profiles of approximately 950 native plants (trying to hit the 1000-mark!!) from around Australia. The profiles attempt to combine natural and cultivation information for the every-day gardener. One of my main beliefs it to use native plants as much as possible in our gardens, so that our gardens add value and resources to the local ecology; a "build it and they will come" philosophy. I have been the primary editor of this database since 2020 and have managed to complete, with the help of Jeff Howes and other members, about 600 additional profiles, all done in any spare time. The database was started by the Late APS member Warren Sheather (d. 2019); a well-regarded native plant enthusiast who worked at University of New England and National Parks, and who cultivated a large native garden on 'Yallaroo' near Armidale. The stats tell us the database is used by about 25,000 people a month. So we keep building....Hopefully, it is of use to anyone growing or selecting plants for gardens.
