Rarely examined topic, Migrant integration into cities and career re-contextualization was the focus of our AMD article. Takeaways for practise are below!
A Warm Welcome Helps Skilled Immigrants Rebuild Their Careers https://lnkd.in/g-gTzWHz The welcome #immigrants receive in cities plays a key role in how well they navigate geographical and social barriers in reestablishing their #careers in their new homes, according to an Academy of Management Discoveries article. “Unlike locals who may easily recognize and navigate the local city in search of career opportunities, #migrants must simultaneously manage the initial uncertainty and discontinuity in their lives and careers. To effectively apply and use their accumulated career capital locally, as newcomers they must quickly understand and familiarize themselves with the new city context (spatial and visual aspects),” wrote the authors, Jelena Zikic of York University and Viktoriya Voloshyna of Thompson Rivers University.

One of my rare media political interviews, which I avoid most of the time, except when it a subject that I am comfortable and confident to discuss, French elections. This was on July 2nd with Lubna Bouza on her business show on Sky News Arabia: - The rise of the far right has its root back to the Arab spring, when several European countries wanted to "spread democracy" in certain Arab/North African countries. This has triggered a massive exodus of illegal immigrants who traveled to Europe on foot and on inflatable boats, which continued to today. It is undeniable and statistics show it, this illegal immigration into Europe is directly correlated with two things: the rise of crime in these countries and the rise of anti-immigrant acts and sentiment - Looking at the profile of a typical illegal immigrant, who abandons everything and literally risks his/her life to walk hundreds of kilometers or travels into the treacherous seas using inflatable boards, most often by paying scalpers who facilitate this illegal immigration. This illegal immigrant typically is in a situation where there is nothing to lose and is in many cases is someone who does not have an educational background or skills and in some cases has a criminal background in the country he/she is running away from. Additionally, more than 80% of these illegal immigrants are 20-40 years old - Would a doctor, who has a clinic in his home country, married with two kids, and who has a stable life, risk everything and jump on an inflatable boat to travel to Europe? Most definitely not, and this is the type of immigrants that Europe needs, since rural areas in Europe are in deep need of medical doctors. Europe also needs plumbers, electricians, technicians, etc, and these mostly have stable lives in their home countries and would not travel illegally and risk their lives - France is no exception, and the French Government has made massive mistakes over the past 2 decades in this regard. The rise of the extremes today is the price to pay for all the geopolitical mistakes made and meddling in other countries' internal politics - The far right has ruled before in Europe and in many cases it was a flop. Once exception is Italy, where the prime minister seem to be taking a stance not too far right in the way she rules, hence the success she is accomplishing Thank you Hazem Shaikh for having me again.
