Westport and Main Roads Western Australia recently held a briefing session with Kwinana industry to talk through the plans for upgrading Anketell Road and developing a new "Port Precinct" in Kwinana. Anketell Road is an important east-west access route, so we were keen to learn the views of companies operating in the Kwinana Industrial Area. We saw big industry and smaller businesses at the event, and their collective input is invaluable as we progress towards detailed planning. Many thanks to the Kwinana Industries Council for bringing everyone together.

On the night before I was scheduled to talk at the 30th Philwater International Conference, I had an opportunity to catch up with Virgilio (Perry) RIVERA, Jr., our executive and leader at Manila Water. Sir Perry and I have since grown our careers outside of Manila Water, with himself now heading his own consultancy but still active in the water sector here and abroad. I've recently been following him here on LinkedIn and I continue to be impressed with sir Perry's insights and zeal in working in water. We caught up on a lot of matters ranging form personal growth and development, to reminiscing on our past work, and of course, his passion on the pursuit of long needed reforms in the water sector, particularly that of a strong and excellent partnership between public and private sectors, backed by an equally strong and logical regulatory framework. While it was a very relaxed setting (no need to prepare for a KRA!), it was filled with a lot of insight. I enjoyed hearing about the latest in industry news, courtesy of Sir Perry's partnership with GWI. While water reforms are still needed, the energy and optimism of leaders such as sir Perry make it an exciting journey. Of course, we should always ensure we take away something from every encounter! Key insights I gathered were: 1. There is no one model or framework that may solve all the problems with the water sector. But strong leadership, and the understanding of how to engage and give confidence to our sources of funds, along with a strong understanding of social responsibility, will certainly drive success. 2. Information is king. The network we sustain and engage with allows us to expand our horizons and opportunities when through exchange and access of information. 3. Opportunities are born from crisis. The ability to pivot and make crucial decisions in the midst of crisis is what makes leaders of us. I'm looking forward to catching sir Perry's talk in the conference, and for our next meeting! How can you best equip your region or city to navigate modern challenges effectively? 🧳 In 2019, we partnered with the Southern Regional Assembly of Ireland to develop a Smart Specialisation Strategy aimed at fostering resilience, inclusivity, sustainability, and competitiveness in the region's economy. Our evidence-based approach, complemented by stakeholder consultations and extensive analysis, identified key priority areas for regional development. From Agri-Food to High-tech Manufacturing, we pinpointed sectors with the greatest potential for growth. Our findings culminated in a detailed table of 21 potential priority areas for Smart Specialisation, each backed by rationale and key stakeholders. We also laid the groundwork for monitoring progress and evaluating outcomes through the introduction of key performance indicators (KPIs). As a result, our project has not only influenced Ireland's national smart specialisation strategy for Innovation (2022-2027) but has also set the stage for economic development funding allocation to the region. By identifying priority areas and recommending actionable steps based on local insights, our project has fostered a strategic and evidence-based approach to regional growth.
