Upgrades to Eastern Freeway and M80 Ring Road locked in https://lnkd.in/gw9njrWY The first contracts for the 2 biggest freeway overhauls in the state’s history have been signed, with major upgrades to the Eastern Freeway and M80 Ring Road to start next year. The freeway upgrades and 6.5km North East Link tunnels will cut travel times by 35 minutes in the north east, taking 15,000 trucks off local roads a day, and creating 12,000 jobs across these 3 massive projects. Through 6 years of detailed design and planning work, significant additional scope has been added to North East Link in response to community feedback – including a longer tunnel, a major upgrade of the M80 Ring Road at Greensborough, better interchanges and more public open space, all of which will create thousands more jobs. #Melbourne #Housing #PropertyMarket #Lycasia #LycasiaGroup #LycasiaProperty

The Bussell Highway Duplication – Bunbury to Busselton Upgrading a 17-kilometre section between Bunbury and Busselton with new lanes, road improvements, and bridge construction. Project Update: The Bussell Highway Duplication project continues to make great progress, with Stage One and the first section of Stage Two complete. The remaining works for Stage Two of this project are well underway, with bridge works nearing completion. Roadworks are ramping up, with a closure of the intersection of Bussell Highway and Sues Road currently in place, with planned closures due to occur at the intersections of Ludlow-Hithergreen Road and Layman Road in the coming months. When completed, the Bussell Highway Duplication project will increase capacity and safety on this major route. It will address the following issues: • Excessive traffic congestion and delays during public holiday weekends; • Longer and more frequent periods of congestion, as traffic increases over time; • Unacceptable network resilience; and • Poor safety record of Bussell Highway in the project area. Terrific #latimes piece underscores that reconnecting and revitalizing rural communities are two of the primary goals of a well-developed high-speed rail network. #BulletTrains The Central Valley is a heavily farmed region — historically separated from Los Angeles, San Francisco and the California coast by both conservative politics and physical distance — and it is first in line to benefit from a high-speed rail infrastructure project being built with tens of billions of dollars in state and federal funding. https://lnkd.in/gM7rdH2k

This is what happens when you drop out of high school. You can't comprehend basic math. The province will spend hundreds of billions of dollars of taxpayer money to build yet ANOTHER highway and guess what will happen? There will still be traffic and so much pollution created by this project our lungs are going to be 80% tar by the end of the decade. If you want to solve the traffic problem in Ontario, invest in trains, trains, and more trains. Metro and rail systems can move 15-20 times more people in each direction than highways, cost less, are better for the environment, and don't require you to rip up farmland and affordable housing for a bunch of asphalt that needs repaving every 5 years. https://lnkd.in/gSiHGCaP

Good piece on City Rail Link (CRL) and its outgoing head, Dr Sweeney, in the NZ Herald today. He discusses many of challenges and obstacles overcome to get the project as far as it is now. As well as that he explores his reasons for his moving on to his next big build. I for one love this quote below from Dr Sweeney on those that have criticism on the need or benefit of the project for Auckland. In fact I would broaden it to include detractors of Rail (freight too) and Public Transport investment more generally in New Zealand. Those that criticise CRL are “flat earthers” all right - and the arguments against it are so simple to debunk now its almost not fun anymore and hardly requires any effort in any shape or form - but hey who doesn’t like a bit of easy fun to flex the mussel for the bigger challenges ahead like the need for Interisland Rail capable ferries 🤔. “How does Sweeney respond to doubters or critics who say the CRL is too expensive, it won’t be used much, it’s useless and took too long? “Nothing. I can’t be bothered. They’re like flat-earthers.” But then - he can’t resist. “City Rail Link is equivalent to 16 lanes of motorways running 20km out from the CBD. Just tell me those suburbs we are going to demolish to build those motorway lanes? No one has told me which suburbs would be up for demolition.” “ Well done Dr Sweeney on leading this projects delivery up to now for Auckland - this will be Auckland cities coming of age project in a 21st century sense - I for one can’t wait to ride it and see how it makes the city into something new and better than it’s ever been before. #rail #infrastructure #auckland #newzealand #cityraillink https://lnkd.in/g-xpeSrk

Highway expansion projects certainly qualify as projects for public use. But do they deliver a public benefit that justifies taking private property?

StROADS - those dangerous urban routes At a recent conference in the USA (ITE in Philadelphia) there was a lot of talk about the dangerous StRoads. These are urban streets that also have a large movement function or high traffic volume. Streets in this case have active frontage that generate pedestrian and other vulnerable road user (VRU) trips. The more busy streets often have a key placemaking function and are a key destination for people. Roads on the other hand are meant to carry high traffic volumes and have a high movement function. Ideally they have very little active frontage and VRU activity. This route type is not unique to the USA. Australia and New Zealand have many StROADS. We just don't call them StROADs. The terminology we use is Mixed-use Arterials. Under the Movement and Place classification system these routes are classified as having both high placemaking and high movement functions. And yes there dangerous. The highest density and majority of crashes, and especially VRU crashes, in our urban areas occur on these mixed use arterials. Hence why there a key area of focus for road safety professionals both here and in the USA. So why don't we call them StROADs down-under - like its a cool name right. Our major issue is that we are not consistent in calling our streets streets and our roads roads. So this names could be confusing. A useful Austroads report on Safe System Infrastructure for Mixed-use Arterials (StROADs) from 2017.

HAVE YOUR INPUT | Traffic + Transportation Strategy feedback extended to Sunday 14 July 📢 We’re calling for your input into the development of a Traffic and Transportation Strategy for the Singleton local government area to address road and transportation infrastructure needs for now and into the future. 🚗 Transport plays a major role in our liveability and with a number of development areas identified across our LGA, appropriate transport infrastructure is required to ensure the safe and efficient movement of traffic around new land release areas, as well as existing residential, commercial and industrial areas. 🛣 The Strategy will also take into account the Singleton Bypass, the largest road infrastructure investment in Singleton’s history. 📍 You now have an extra week to let us know about any trouble spots related to road condition, public transport, road congestion, speed limits, safety and freight by dropping a pin on our virtual map by Sunday 14 July 2024 ➡️ https://lnkd.in/gatZ8zR5 💬 The information we receive will be incorporated into the Draft Singleton Traffic + Transportation Strategy, which will be placed on public exhibition for community feedback later this year.
