🫶 Equity, diversity, and inclusion work together and reinforce each other. Guiding our teams on how to build a more inclusive workplace is a priority for us in 2024 and beyond. As part of Broadsign's ongoing commitment to women's development in the workplace and a step towards creating a women-led Employee Resource Group (ERG) within the organization, we recently welcomed Jennifer (Tishman) Willey of Wet Cement to speak to our team about important topics like inclusion and embracing equity in the workplace.  Jennifer shared some of her top tips for accelerating gender equity in the workplace, sharing insights for allies and leaders. It’s day two of our IWD 2024 campaign, and we’re excited to share the second read that has inspired us to think and act inclusively. Inclusion on Purpose: An Intersectional Approach to Creating a Culture of Belonging at Work by Ruchika Tulshyan Tulshyan’s debut book asks how organizations can foster diversity, equity, and inclusion. She argues that inclusion is achieved through awareness, intention, and practice, and presents a blueprint for how organizations can use their privilege to expose bias while centering women of colour. Tulshyan centers the workplace experiences of women of color, who are subject to both gender and racial bias. It is at the intersection of gender and race, she shows, that we discover the kind of inclusion policies that benefit all. Why we picked it: Inclusion on Purpose is everything Thousand&One stands for. The book is two-fold: it speaks to our community using research and anecdotes that validate our lived experiences, but it also speaks to those in charge, offering concrete steps organizations can take to address and prevent workplace biases. International Women’s Day - Inspire inclusion. What More Should We Be Doing? We love seeing the ripples created by this annual event - #IWD is one of those days that really does make a difference. It’s a chance for collective visibility, for celebrating excellence and nurturing peers and allies, for taking a minute to reflect on what more we can do. The theme of this year’s #IWD is ‘Inspire Inclusion’ and that sense of inspiring change is something we’ve been committing to. In the tech sector we know that there are still big challenges around gender - around retaining senior female talent, recruiting younger women into some digital sectors and helping women of all kinds find their place in our communities. The stats are stark - according to 2024 Women in Tech figures women make up 28% of the workforce - but it’s worth repeating them and using them as a jumping off point. For us they are a way to #InspireInclusion. In the last 12 months our senior team has been working hard to do just that. Our CEO Liz Rhodes has written and shared about her own journey and continues to work as a mentor and educator, as well as pushing for greater representation in the world we work in. The senior team has been hosting workshops and panel events - with more planned for the months ahead - to hear more about how we can facilitate change. We’re looking at practical barriers around recruitment and training, smart ways to retain staff, new ways of working that reflect the way we all live. Among other things, IWD is a great prompt to reflect on the incredible contributions of women in business. So I thought I'd take a moment to reflect on my own team. The best hires I've made in my career have all been women (sorry gents, but it's true). Our top seller last year was a woman. Our top seller (so far) this year is a woman. Our women swept up most of our annual awards across Sales, Customer Success and Solutions Consulting. This is not a coincidence. At Harver we have >50% women across our Sales, Business Development and Solution Consulting teams. Considering the impact they have on our business, maybe <50% is too low. We need to keep tearing down the barriers that have traditionally held women in business back - whether that is equal pay, promotions, tackling sexism in the workplace or creating supportive policies for working mothers. And we should do it not just because it's the right thing to do, but because it creates great business outcomes. #iwd2024 #womenintech #womeninsales
