In the lead up to World Mangrove Day on Friday, we are sharing videos of community leaders spearheading #mangrove restoration and conservation efforts in #Mexico from World Resources Institute . Mangrove restoration consists of difficult manual labor, historically the terrain of men. But Oriana Montes de Oca and the Cooperativa Carey have flipped the script on that narrative, turning the page for a previously degraded mangrove. Mangrove guardians come in many forms, but one thing remains the same for all of them: a steadfast commitment to combatting #climatechange. https://lnkd.in/gHS4g9NV

On August 9, we celebrate the International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples! ✊🏾 Today and every day, community leaders, elders, women, youth, and their allies worldwide are working toward supporting their communities’ struggle for land rights and sustainable, self-determined development. Why do community land rights matter? Up to 2.5 billion people live in community arrangements worldwide and directly manage over 50% of the world’s land—including much of the remaining forestland and biodiversity hotspots. And yet, only 11% of these lands are recognized as being owned by Indigenous Peoples, Afro-descendant Peoples, or local communities. Scaling up efforts to close the gap in community land rights represents the world’s single greatest opportunity to advance global #climate, #biodiversity, and development goals. Getting this right also means protecting human rights and women’s rights. Learn how at www.rightsandresources.org. #LandRightsNow #IndigenousPeoplesDay #WeAreIndigenous

Women who defend our environment from extractivism often face significant harm rooted in deep-seated structural oppression. Despite the risks to their lives and well-being, women environmental defenders play powerful and diverse roles in uniting communities while resisting exploitation. However, funding focused on addressing gender-based violence against women environmental activists represents only 0.05% of overall foundation funding for the environment. In a collaborative report from GAGGA, Global Greengrants, and SAGE Fund, we share opportunities for funders to better support this work. https://lnkd.in/eUacMRQh

In the integrated climate-biodiversity-livelihood action 'agency based adaptation' is a sustainable approach where engagement of the community in biodiversity conservation and natural resource management can be ensured through 'Capacity Bridging' . CNRS is always heading towards a more comprehensive and inclusive approach to promote 'agency, gender equality and youth stewardship in environmental management ', Biodiversity for Resilient Livelihoods (B4RL) project supported by The Embassy of Sweden is one of those endeavors where one of the intangible outcomes is knowledge bridging accross the generation. https://lnkd.in/dnWDV5Yj

Women’s Land and Resource Rights Global Leader | Climate Justice | Advocate | Educator 🌍Committed to co-leadership, co-design, and collaborative action towards change.
Congratulations to Celina Salcedo-La Vina and co-authors for releasing this report: Potential Risks to Women’s Land Rights From Climate Actions: Exploring Matrilineal Communities in Colombia, Costa Rica, and Panama https://lnkd.in/euNr8rWx There's no question that women's rights to land in matrilineal-based tenure systems are culturally legitimate. And we know across all tenure systems that in times of transition, when there are pressures on land, or when there are benefits/profit to be had from having land rights, that women's rights can be at greater risk. This report shows how land tenure systems set the parameters for the distribution of costs and benefits of climate actions, and how those parameters intersect with gendered economic and social dynamics. It also points the way forward - land tenure systems and their built-in gender dynamics must be at the foundation of climate actions that touch on land; they must be understood, protected, adapted (where needed), and promoted to ensure fair, equitable, and responsible outcomes. Read the report and let us know what you think.
