[Our own way 🙌] Key project in Alaska!🛣 Winter has definitely come to North America, where most of our activities are on hold and awaiting better weather conditions before they resume! Take the Sterling Highway upgrade program on which Colas is working, for example. Since it was first built in the 1940s, this major highway for the Kenai Peninsula, in southern Alaska, has become increasingly congested, particularly in the summertime. This has resulted in safety concerns for users. Once spring rolls around, our teams will start up again on this long-term project (expected to be finished by the end of 2028). The planned works include creating overtaking lanes and wildlife crossings and building a 15-km extension to the road. Read this article and many more about our projects worldwide in the latest issue of our Colas magazine, Routes: Magazine Routes n°50 (https://swll.to/ReadHere) #CreatingConnections #WeOpenTheWay #ColasDares

Starting today, the Vancouver Fraser Port Authority-led ECHO Program is launching its seasonal measures to protect endangered southern resident killer whales and other at-risk whales off B.C.’s southern coast. Ship operators from over 60 marine transportation organizations will participate in these efforts, which encourage ships to either slow down or stay at a distance from critical habitat areas off the coasts of B.C. and Washington State. Last year, these measures helped reduce underwater noise by nearly 50% and research shows that the slowdowns also reduce the risk of ship strikes by up to nearly one-third. Together with our partners from government, the marine transportation industry, Indigenous communities, environmental groups, we are excited to create a quieter and safer underwater environment for the whales. In Dunedin, New Zealand, the Otago Regional Council, Dunedin City Council, and Port Otago are enhancing navigational safety and coastal erosion research using the real-time ocean data collected by a fleet of Spotter buoys. Spotters were deployed off of Dunedin's coast at three strategic locations to: - Improve understanding of swell conditions for vessels entering Otago Harbour - Support the city council’s coastal planning work - Provide swell and wave height conditions to support safe navigation of the Taieri Mouth Bar Read more in the Otago Daily Times below. https://bit.ly/4buLs3C #SofarOcean

In coastal management, often an aerial view shows things that are unseeable on the ground (or water). Below the tip of the airplane wing is the North West Channel coming out of Moreton Bay, Queensland. Seaward of the channel is Moreton Island and the ‘Wild Banks’ (lighter blue waters) including two artificial reefs, with fish caves created to attract fish for recreational fishing. The majority of the water in-view is in the Moreton Bay Marine Park, with approximately half the area of bank region protected under national park zonage.
