Day 2: National Safe Boating Week Tip for Pleasure Craft Boaters Around Commercial Navigation As motorboat and pleasure craft season reaches its peak, mariners must stay vigilant and prepare for the unexpected. Situational awareness is crucial, as poor judgment or inattention can cause a motorboat to get too close to a tow, lose power, or face other issues, potentially leading to a dangerous situation where the boat may go under the tow of barges. Shown here is Amherst Madison's M/V CAPT. ED HARRIS, traveling upbound on the Kanawha River with six empty barges. This area, known as the Winfield Pool, passes through St. Albans, Nitro, and the Charleston City Front, which are popular spots for pleasure craft, especially on weekends during the summer. To enhance safety, the CAPT. ED HARRIS has deployed "Last Chance Lines" draped over the head of its two strings of empty barges. These lines serve as a last-resort lifeline for individuals in a pleasure craft that may go under the tow. They provide a critical opportunity for someone to grab on and avoid going under with their boat. This safety measure has proven effective in the past and is an important strategy to potentially save lives. #NationalSafeBoatingWeek #LastChanceLines

🚤 NY Boaters: Know Your Right of Way Rules! 🌊 As boating season kicks into high gear, it's essential to remember New York State's right of way regulations to ensure safety and smooth sailing on the water. Here are some key points to keep in mind: Meeting Head-On: Both vessels should alter course to starboard (right) and pass port-to-port (left). Crossing Paths: The vessel on the starboard (right) side has the right of way. The vessel on the port (left) side must give way. Overtaking: The overtaking vessel must keep clear of the vessel being overtaken. Pass on either side but ensure it's safe and clear. Sailboats vs. Powerboats: Sailboats under sail have the right of way over power-driven vessels, except when the sailboat is overtaking another vessel. Narrow Channels: Vessels navigating a narrow channel must keep to the starboard side. Vessels less than 20 meters or sailing vessels should not impede the passage of larger vessels that can navigate only within the channel. Here is more information about Knowing Your Right of Way Rules: https://lnkd.in/ezuvHStk Stay safe and courteous on the water. Happy boating! 🚤⚓️🌞 #BoatingSafety #NYBoating #RightOfWay #StaySafe #livelifewevegotthis

It’s Boating Safety Week! I was really excited when the MIAPBC (the producers of the Palm Beach International Boat Show and Palm Beach Boat Parade) asked me to join them in talking about boating safety because it is a topic near and dear to my heart. Let’s make sure our time on the water this summer is fun AND safe! Here are some essential tips to keep in mind: Most Important - Don’t Drink and Drive the Boat! Just like driving, operating a boat under the influence is dangerous. Stay sober to ensure everyone’s safety. And remember - even if you’re not the captain, if something happens - it is easier to swim to safety if you’re not tipsy or drunk while doing it! Also, know where your life jackets are and make sure there are always enough for everyone on board. Always look for flags, swimmers, divers and other boats and ensure your boat is equipped with necessary safety gear – fire extinguishers, flares, first aid kits, and a working radio. Let’s have some fun this summer and make sure every voyage a safe one! 🌞🚤 #BoatingSafetyWeek #SafeBoating #LifeJackets #StaySober #SafetyFirst

Did you know that in Canada, it's the law for powered recreational boat operators to have basic boating knowledge? 🚤 The Pleasure Craft Operator’s Card (PCOC) is your ticket to safely navigating Canadian waters with a motorized vessel. But remember, the PCOC is just the beginning. It doesn’t cover non-motorized craft like sailboats, canoes, or kayaks, or even passengers. Comprehensive boating safety education is key for everyone to fully enjoy the boating experience. ⛵️ Click here: linktr.ee/lifesavingbcyk and hit "Be WaterSmart" for more safety tips when you are boating or for when you are in or around the water. #lifesavingsociety #lifesaving #lifesavingbcyk #SBAW2024 #SafeBoatingAwarenessWeek
