In July, GBH celebrates Disability Pride Month to honor the history, achievements, experiences, and struggles of the disability community. GBH is proud of its long history of making media accessible to people with disabilities. We collaborated with World Channel last week for a discussion around the opportunities, strategies, and challenges facing journalists and filmmakers with disabilities – on both sides of the camera. Dan Habib, Cara Reedy, Liz Pritchard and GBH News' own Meghan Smith shared their perspectives on how disability is covered in film and in newsrooms. Have you ever attended a meeting or presentation where graphic recording, or graphic facilitation, was used? Studies show that pictures and images make ideas more understandable and memorable while also making communication more efficient and actionable. On average, people remember 10% of what they hear, 20% of what they read, and 80% of what they see and do. Not only does live sketching captivate audiences, but it can also help explain complex issues, and boost event engagement online and in-person. Our disabilities are a fundamental aspect of our identities we want nondisabled people to see, otherwise we will not get our needs met and we will not be included. When we obfuscate our disabilities with euphemisms, like differently-abled, special needs and physically or mentally challenged, we not only reinforce the idea that being disabled is shameful, we erase our unmet access and support needs, we erase our experiences of ableism and disablism, and we erase the shared identity that connects us to our disability community. #DisabilityRights #DisabilityInclusion #DisabilityIsNotADirtyWord

Today is International Disability Day Today is about reinforcing the importance of securing the rights of disabled individuals to celebrate inclusion so that everyone can participate equally! It's about removing barriers, judgments and stigmas! For many of us, this is celebrated and anguished over daily! When you think of Inclusion what comes to your mind? When you think of disability what comes to mind? Is it an obvious or a visible disability or is it a silent or invisible disability? #interntionaldisabilityday #disability #disabilityawareness #disabilityinclusion #specialneedsparent #neurodivergent

Disability Pride Day 7 #DisabilityPrideMonth #DisabledAndProud #DisabilityAwareness If you are my ally in the fight for disability rights & awareness, here are 4 tips on how you can make a difference... - Fully understand that Disability is not a dirty word - Someone can have a visible disability and/or a non visible disability. I have both🥰 - Learn with me about Disability History including about rights, trailblazers and the laws in your country(countries) - Support those who are disabled (friends, family, peers, colleagues, artists, singers, authors, athletes and so on) - If you are unsure what, where, why, when and how just ask

July is Disability Pride Month in the United States. 🦾👩🏼🦽👩🏿🦯♿️ 🧩 The month-long celebration honors people with disabilities and their unique talents and skills, and aims to promote visibility and awareness of the disability community. Disability Pride Month has been celebrated annually in July since 1990, the year the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) was signed into law. The ADA prohibits discrimination against people with disabilities in many areas, including employment, transportation, housing, and access to government programs and services. Its crazy to think the ADA has only been around 34 years! I’ll be posting relevant content all month long. #DisabilityInclusion #DisabilityPride #IHaveADisability #DEIA

Tip 5: Ensure people with disabilities can be active participants in your interventions. Think about the following questions when assessing program accessibility and visit the embedded links for supportive resources: • Are your program delivery staff trained to identify people for physical, sensory, intellectual, and other disabilities? • Do you offer support to ensure that disabled people can fully participate in your programs? • Are your materials available in alternate formats? • Is your website accessible? #DisabilityPrideMonth #DisabilityInclusionNetwork mage description: A dark blue image with text, NACDD is proud to celebrate Disability Pride Month. Today, we celebrate the 34th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act and Disability Pride Month! Signed into law on July 26, 1990, the Americans with Disability Act (ADA) prohibits discrimination against individuals with disabilities—both visible and non-visible—such as requiring employers to provide accommodations for individuals with disabilities and ensuring that buildings and public transportation are accessible. Our goal is to provide an inclusive and accessible space for our patients, visitors, and team members and advocate for equal opportunities for all. Join us as we celebrate and recognize achievements in this area while continuing to work toward bridging the gap in disability inclusion. #ADA #AmericansWithDisabilitiesAct #ADAanniversary #ADA34 #DisabilityPrideMonth #NationalDisabilityIndependenceDay #inclusivity #accessibility
