The ways artificial intelligence will change how we learn, work, and live are still unfolding. At WGU Labs, we’re largely enthusiastic about advancements in technology. Yet, we also apply a healthy dose of skepticism to promises of tech-driven transformation. In AI, we see the potential for tools to help learners succeed at scale while simultaneously recognizing the ways they could uphold historic and current systemic inequities. It will be vital for administrators and EdTech founders to understand these nuances as they adopt and build AI-based solutions. If they don’t, we risk leaving underserved learners and underresourced institutions behind once again. In our latest blog, we examine AI’s potential to both help and harm, so we can address what’s wrong and lean into what’s right: https://lnkd.in/gtKbnsYH

Interesting piece by Taylor Swaak about how AI is interacting with higher ed. This article discusses some of the complications taking place in higher ed institutions with AI. For example, Swaak brings up that " AI and GenAI technologies are maturing rapidly, while colleges are historically slow to evolve." While I think that the points made in this piece are important, they did leave out one use case of AI in higher ed that I find is highly important: Improving accessibility. Personally, I believe AI could be a helpful tool for students with disabilities or different learning styles. What do you think? #HigherEd #AIIntegration #AccessibleEducation

The question “How is #HigherEducation handling #AI?” is common in 2024, and for good reason. Most professions and industries are grappling with the impact of artificial intelligence and automation, which has recently accelerated with generative AI through ChatGPT and other tools that have brought AI to the masses. This topic is nuanced with implications both philosophical (how are students using it?) and ethical (will this technology exacerbate equity gaps?). But higher education can’t avoid evolving along with new technology. Those like Dakota State University President Jose-Marie Griffiths say it well: “We lean into every technology because that’s our role: to prepare our students not for today’s technology … but for tomorrow’s technology.” The Chronicle of Higher Education’s Taylor Swaak delves into how colleges are—or aren’t—approaching AI.

"GenAI’s accessibility — a characteristic that has stymied large-scale adoption of tech advancements like virtual reality — has been another game-changer, experts said. The technology feels more human. One doesn’t have to be a computer-science fanatic, or a programmer, to engage with it. That has created a wave of excitement and consternation. An essay about students’ use of ChatGPT was the most-read Chronicle article in 2023. And it’s not a passing fad. Nearly everyone The Chronicle of Higher Education spoke to for this article was confident of GenAI’s staying power in higher education. Industry watchers like Gartner, a technological research and consulting company, agree, predicting in a July 2023 report that generative AI technologies would become more mainstream in the higher-ed sector in two to five years. 'We looked across sectors, and higher education by far and away had the most active board-level discussions about generative AI,' said Tony Sheehan, a vice president and an analyst within Gartner’s education research and advisory team. 'Why? Because it’s disruptive to the sector. It’s challenging to the sector.'” #AIinEducation #highereducation #educationinnovation
