Do you know how many places, spaces or artwork where you live are named after women? The response is probably not great. In fact, it may be quite appalling or just plain embarrassing. Victoria has a rich history of incredible women who have shaped this state. Despite this, our public landmarks lack a gender lens. There are too few women recognised and honoured in street names, parks and gardens, state electorates, local government wards and via significant sculptural and other public artworks. Thankfully this is on a course for change. Congratulations to the State Government and Natalie Hutchins MP for investing in a second round of the Women’s Public Art Program! Rachel is the definition of “impact” having been recognized as a PSBJ “40 Under 40” for not only her career achievements but for her constant pursuit to elevate and bring other women with her on the journey. Rachel C. is a board member and treasurer of Impact Washington - NIST MEP, the Washington MEP Center, and part of the MEP National Network™. She is the Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer at Erin Air, Inc. Camarillo founded the Women in Manufacturing (WiM) – Washington state chapter in 2019. She’s also a busy wife and mom to boys she enjoys spending time with. In honor of Women’s History Month this March, she reflected on her career and the future of women in manufacturing. It is important to have diverse perspectives contributing to all aspects of business across industries, she says, adding that many industries are struggling with attracting women and other minorities. “It can be daunting to try to move the needle alone in this, and we should work together as an industry to steer the norms in the right direction,” Camarillo says. “For me, I've been reflecting more on how it’s important to focus on getting in front of young school-aged children to educate them on what life in manufacturing could look like for them.” https://lnkd.in/dQriViTT #MEPNationalNetwork #WomensHistoryMonth #manufacturing

Thanks to Rina Shin for being a part of this year’s IDSA Women in Design, and for sharing an infographic that highlights what many women in the field have been feeling. I know there are better writers and minds out there who are studying, advocating, and in the trenches of this community. But as part of the dipping demographic, I will say here that progress jumpstarted in the ‘Lean In Days’ - really saw a stress test during the Pandemic (and failed). IYKYK and the data shows. Women 30-44 (read into it)! …Great we’ve built a more equitable talent pool; but the continued miss is the failure to convert that into Senior+ level designers and managers. Women are getting passed over. In my career, I found success when I had female mentor/managers who passionately (aggressively) advocated with and for me. The numbers weren’t good back then, but they’re looking even worse now. 20 years ago in my first corporate design team, I was the only ‘girl’ awkwardly watching a bunch of bros slapping each other’s backs. Today on my LinkedIn, the feed is still full of men congratulating other men. I’m not the only one who’s felt a lack of sustained progress. When young women ask me- yes, I encourage community building (which means including other disciplines because we need the numbers and we have the same problems) but more so, I ask for women to advocate for each other in the workplace. Noting, as we move through our careers the more aggressive that space making can and should be. I think Daenerys had a sane thought at the start - in our institutional structures, you need to get to the top to break the wheel.

Please take a moment to look at these stats on Women in Industrial Design... It's incredibly important to recognize that ID is a field almost as male dominated as engineering is and it's even more important to learn about the steps we can take to make the filed more equitable Top 3 facts that stood out to me: 1. 51% of ID grads are women, but women only make up 28% of Industrial Designers 2. The percentage of women in ID has decreased from 30.77% in 2010 to 18.6% in 2021 3. Today, the U.S. Department of Commerce announced the CHIPS Women in Construction Framework, a set of five best practices, as well as the first voluntary commitments to the Framework from Intel Corporation and Micron Technology. The Framework is part of U.S. Secretary of Commerce Gina Raimondo’s ongoing Million Women in Construction initiative that aims to expand the American construction workforce by doubling the number of women in construction over the next decade. https://lnkd.in/gAF8v8w2
