As the world gets more “connected” (digitally), study after study shows that we’re people are feeling more alone than ever. Can wine HELP?
This picture was taken in 2018, not long after I moved to Australia and began living my “dream life” in Barossa Valley. The biggest challenge for me was adapting to a new place, with an entirely new culture, and making friends. How do we build new friendships?
I created a group called the Brazilian House where I invited everyone I met in the wine industry to come to my house. We would pick a theme, and everyone would bring a wine and food to match the theme. We did that regularly, every second Sunday night, and it really became something we all loved and looked forward to. We had so much fun, shared stories and created such strong emotional connections with each other. It was a game where everybody could win.
Getting together in groups like this is such a common thing in Brazil – we call these groups Confraria (“Brotherhood”), and I think it’s had a big influence on why people are drinking more wine in Brazil today. We are one of the only countries in the world where wine consumption is not decreasing… in fact, in Brazil it is INCREASING. We all love the LIFESTYLE that wine brings, why note sell that feeling in other countries?
According to Beverage Daily, “Brazil - the second largest market in South America - saw 11.6% growth [in 2023], returning 2020-2021 levels”.
Also, according to IWSR “Wine volumes for H1 2021-2022 were down -5%, and of the top 20 wine markets, only Brazil is drinking more wine now than it did in 2017”.
Wouldn’t it be great if while we’re trying to help the wine industry, we could also tackle one of the biggest problems facing society today, by helping bring people together.
Why not let Brazilian culture inspire us, and go out and create our own Confrarias, bring some fun into people’s lives and get people connected over a few glasses of delicious wine. ♥️🍷
Speaking of Brazil, I’m heading home for a few months at the end of May, I will share here everything that’s happening on the other side of the world.
