Here’s a fun fact: Energy reliability is as critical as soil fertility. Yet, South African farmers face an unprecedented challenge in maintaining productivity amid the country’s ongoing power crisis. In the latest episode of Food For Mzansi’s Farmer’s Inside Track podcast, Craig Harrison, the provincial head of Land Bank in the Western Cape, sheds light on a solution that could shake up the agricultural sector – the Agro-Energy Fund. “This isn’t just about keeping the lights on,” Harrison emphasises. “The Agro-Energy Fund offers a dual benefit – ensuring that farms have reliable energy during load shedding and helping reduce long-term electricity costs. Some farmers may see immediate savings, while others will benefit in the long term, but the impact on operational stability is undeniable.” The fund supports a variety of alternative energy investments, particularly solar panels and battery storage systems which are crucial for modernising and sustaining farm operations. This focus on renewable energy not only addresses the immediate crisis but also aligns with broader global trends towards sustainability in agriculture. By investing in these technologies, South African farmers can position themselves at the forefront of a green agricultural revolution, reducing their carbon footprint while enhancing their resilience against future energy disruptions. We are investing $44 million to help small and medium businesses reduce emissions and lower energy costs through technologies, not taxes. Smaller businesses often face financial, timing and other barriers to implementing energy efficiency changes that would benefit their operations. Our investment will help 21 businesses get first-of-kind projects off the ground, including new technologies for power generation, agriculture, forestry, oil and gas, fertilizer, construction, electricity and other sectors. The funding, delivered through Emissions Reduction Alberta’s Emerging Innovators Challenge, will help create jobs, keep businesses competitive and reduce emissions. If successful, the 21 projects are projected to create more than 875 jobs, contribute $238 million to Alberta’s GDP by 2027 and eliminate 5 million tonnes of emissions by 2050. Chair of Energy for a Secure Future - keen to advance a new conversation on #Energy, resilient communities at home and abroad, reconciliation, infrastructure, and innovation.
Action to reduce emissions means holding many balls in the air - including food security. This a great piece with remarks from Energy for a Secure Future Advisory Council Member Keith Currie speaking to the energy realities of Canadian farmers at a recent Sarnia-Lambton Economic Partnership event. Insights from practitioners like Keith - an 8th generation farmer - is key to getting Canada's energy and environmental policy right. #energyTrilemma #leadership #energy4people Farmers “don’t have a lot of options” when it comes to energy sources so “getting natural gas expansion through rural Canada, in particular, is very important to us" https://lnkd.in/enF7s5-d

We’ve taken another step forward in enabling positive and sustainable #coexistence with resources, renewable energy and the agriculture sector with the introduction of the 𝘔𝘪𝘯𝘦𝘳𝘢𝘭 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘌𝘯𝘦𝘳𝘨𝘺 𝘙𝘦𝘴𝘰𝘶𝘳𝘤𝘦𝘴 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘖𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘳 𝘓𝘦𝘨𝘪𝘴𝘭𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘉𝘪𝘭𝘭 2024 (𝘔𝘌𝘙𝘖𝘓𝘈). If passed, the bill will strengthen coexistence frameworks, address coal seam gas-induced subsidence impacts and expand the roles of our state’s coexistence institutions. MEROLA is now under consideration by the Clean Economy Jobs, Resources and Transport Committee. These reforms follow extensive consultation and aim to build stronger relationships between resources, agriculture and other land users. Amber Wenck, A/Director, Georesources Policy, speaks to the importance of what the bill moves to implement and why collaboration and relationship building is at the heart of our success. "This Bill, if passed, will implement important outcomes for coexistence in Queensland, including providing a way forward in identifying and managing CSG-induced subsidence. Extensive consultation with a broad range of stakeholders has been instrumental in delivering these reforms." Read more https://lnkd.in/gyzn6yAJ #wedeliver #QRIDP

The Sites Reservoir Project and its 1 billion dollars of public funding is just one more way for the State to funnel water into the fields of wealthy farm owners. Not surprising, but once again disappointing, this proposal would continue to enforce the inexcusable standard that unsustainable agricultural practices are permissible for the sake of profits. Meanwhile, low-income households will be priced out of accessing water and of course, the environment will suffer. Sites is as far from a climate-resilient water project as it could get. Californian’s indisputable right to water should never be jeopardized for the profit margins of a few and freshwater ecosystems that depend on cold water flows can no longer be left in the dust. One Acre Fund's Jeremy Golan shares what the organization aims to accomplish in designing its blended finance vehicle, the Smallholder Resilience Ventures (SRV), and their experience as a Catalytic Climate Finance Facility (CC Facility) grantee. At COP28, the CC Facility announced its first class of six market-ready #blendedfinance vehicles including SRV. One Acre Fund launched SRV to fill the agricultural financing gap in #Africa, enabling SMEs to scale and provide guaranteed premium markets to smallholders growing climate-friendly crops. SRV aims to strengthen value chains and increase farmer income and #climate resilience — all while creating investable SME opportunities.
