This settles the debate, IMO. If you are aspiring to become a PM, below may be helpful. - You need the mindset to ‘build’, not manage. In fact, the only way you love being a product guy, is if you love building products and solving problems. - It’s not as sexy as you think. In most cases, you have to roll up your sleeves and be the jack of all trades to make things happen. - Managing Jira/backlog is not the job, it may be a part of the job for some PMs. - MBA may help you learn business skills, but it barely helps you become a good PM. The only way is to build and learn along the way. - For all the aspiring new PM’s, my humble recommendation is to rather focus on working at a company/leader with great product culture, than aiming for a PM title. - And finally, you have to make decisions almost every day, and most will define the trajectory of the product/business. Before you get overwhelmed, it’s important to be grounded in First Principles Thinking. It makes life easier.

Product-led isn't about "product managers in charge". Design-led isn't about "designers in charge". Engineering-led shouldn't be about "engineers in charge"… Unless you’re founder-led , Investor-led or Consultant-led😅.

Paying a CPO $300k a year to write Jira tickets and groom a backlog? Seriously? Why are some companies hiring heavy-weight Product Leaders when they don't have to? There's this assumption floating around that the 1st Product hire must be a Product Leader. But that is nonsense! Question: will SaaS "multi-product" (as it was conceived and implemented during the low interest rate period) continue to be a viable strategy? Some thoughts: 1. Were these extensions actual products? Or pricing/packaging constructs? 2. Was the added operational complexity sustainable? 3. Was it reasonable to account for revenue on a product by product basis given that they drew heavily on the foundation of existing offerings? 4. Was it customer-centric or investor-centric? 5. Did it obscure and gloss over issues with the foundational biz model? 6. How did it impact product manager hiring? Thoughts appreciated.
