What is Atmospheric Turbulence? #Turbulence occurs when airflow becomes irregular and chaotic, creating eddies and vertical currents due to obstacles or changes in wind speed and direction. The intensity of the eddies depends on surface wind, terrain, and air stability. Last month I had the opportunity to present some of our recent work on wind turbine wake modelling at #TORQUE2024 in Florence! We highlighted the limitations of today's industry-standard models in capturing the turbulence structure in the wake, which can significantly impact fatigue loading on downwind turbines. Looking at these animated wake inflow fields it's apparent that models like Effective Wake Turbulence and #DynamicWakeMeandering are not capturing all the nuances of waked flow we observe in high-fidelity #LargeEddySimulations. New paper within the #SUDOCO_eu project 🗞 The paper introduces a load surrogate model to estimate wind turbine damage equivalent loads (DELs) based on local inflow and control parameters, without depending on turbine position. [BLOG] TIMES (V) - VALIDATION OVERVIEW 📈 The #TIMES validation process utilized data from 272 global sites, from both public and private sources. Hourly and 10-minute data were validated using metrics such as Root Mean Square Error (RMSE), correlation, and absolute bias to ensure a comprehensive evaluation of wind speed accuracy. Additionally, we assessed wind standard deviation, Turbulence Intensity (TI), Extreme Events (Vref), Ramps, Power Spectral Density (PSD), seasonal cycles, and vertical profile, among others. Find below, in the last slide, the main metrics by terrain categories using a specially designed Terrain Complexity Index (#TCIX). On the left, it shows the number of points for each terrain type.
