Hiring a Product Designer/UX Designer seems pretty simple right? Like making a cacio e pepe (don't ruin it by adding butter or oil) Time and time again I see people going about it the wrong way and so much time/effort is being wasted. 1️⃣ "Experience in Figma would be beneficial" 2️⃣ "You'll be responsible for conducting user research and creating hi fidelity prototypes" Great, this is like telling a Business Analyst you'll be responsible for creating documentation. No s**** Be specific. The cost of a poor design talent hiring strategy will be greater than just getting a specialist do it for you. It'll save you time and money. I hired a Senior UX Designer a little over a month ago. At that time, we had to turn down a handful of other amazingly talented people. On Wednesday, our team opened up another Senior UX role. I reached out to the hiring managers and asked if they'd like to revisit conversations with any of the previous finalists - they did and we had 1 person in mind. I talked to this person yesterday, made an offer and they signed last night! In less than 24 hours, we got it done. 🚩 If you're hiring a UX designer take note -> ⚠ As a designer with over two decades of experience, I have learned that combining the roles of UX designer and front-end developer in a job posting is not the most effective approach. 🦄 Both roles require their own skillset and expertise, and trying to find a "unicorn" who can excel in both roles will likely result in less output or a higher cost. 🤲 Instead, consider hiring an amazing UX designer and an amazing front-end developer to work together. This collaboration will produce excellent results for your product. 🍽 Remember, a professional UX designer and a professional front-end developer will each have a full plate of end-to-end deliverables. Keep these roles separate in your job posting to ensure the most effective hiring process.

We have so many product design role names that it’s confusing not only to non-designers but also to the designers themselves 😅 - Product Designer - UX/UI Designer - UX Designer - UI Designer - Product Experience Designer - Interaction Designer - Service Designer - Interface Designer - Web designer - … Some of these roles are getting separated because of the skillset required. For example, UX and UI. But some of them are just different names for the same thing. So what can we do with all this? These are just names. We should focus more on the responsibilities and what we can do for our customers and business. I think this naming issue was driven by the super fast growth of the Tech industry in the previous decade, and now things are going slower and more consciously. All these redundancies across different companies, hiring freezes, fewer design roles, and the boost of AI are all signals of transformation. In-person? 🔍 Focus: UX research? UI design? Product design? 🧱 Structure: Start-up? Agency? Corporation? 🏙️ Industry: E-commerce? Education? Travel? (and so many more) The amount of job options and combinations can be overwhelming. How do you decide where to focus? To start, change the questions to understand what you value and are passionate about. 🧑🏻💻 Work style: Do I value in-person camaraderie or remote flexibility? 🔍 Focus: Which parts of the design process am I interested in or skilled at? 🧱 Structure: Do I value intimate work settings or defined hierarchies and teams? Do I value established processes or helping to establish processes? 🏙️ Industry: What types of products or apps have I found exciting or interesting? Start by knowing yourself. UX career path: Junior to Manager (it's simpler than you think) After 2 years as a UX Designer People switch to Product Manager The reason? ➡️ They don't know how deep they can develop. Learn what’s required at each level. That’s the secret sauce. Here’s the skills by seniority: 👶🏻 𝗝𝘂𝗻𝗶𝗼𝗿: — Majority time spent in design tools — Focus on execution and mastering craft — Works on small parts of the product (w/ guidance) 👦🏻 𝗠𝗶𝗱-𝗹𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹: — Understand the dev process — Builds toolbox of frameworks: UX, UI, comms — Experiment collab improvements, i.e. workshops — Involved in problem definition & project management 👨🏻 𝗦𝗲𝗻𝗶𝗼𝗿: — Excel at project management — Mentors mid-level & junior designers — Drive design processes from start to finish — Contribute to product strategy discussions — Wears many hats, going beyond just design tasks 🧔🏻♂️ 𝗟𝗲𝗮𝗱/𝗠𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗿: — Leads major initiatives — Defines strategic goals — Speak often about design's value — Guides positive team culture & career growth — Takes a big-picture view, i.e. setting up teams — Decides team allocation (think orchestra conductor) Working in UX offers a rich & varied career path.
