In the ROAD2X research project, five partners will mature a new, innovative method for operating high-temperature electrolysis, so that the lifetime of the electrolysis plants can potentially be increased to over 10 years. The Innovation Fund has invested DKK 18 million in the project.
Power2X is a term for the use of sustainable electricity from solar cells and wind turbines for the production of synthetic fuels. Power2X is therefore expected to be central in the transition to a more sustainable energy system in the coming years. One of the promising possibilities associated with Power2X is high-temperature electrolysis.
Unfortunately, high-temperature electrolysis plants have so far suffered from a limited lifespan, and the electrolysis units rarely last longer than 2 years. The degradation is due, among other things, to impurities which "poison" the units over time, as well as temperature fluctuations in the units during operation.
The collaborators in ROAD2X will jointly develop a new method for operating the electrolysis units. The method is called AC:DC operation, and can precisely address the aforementioned challenges with impurities and temperature fluctuations.
The founder of Dynelectro, Søren Højgaard Jensen, has patented the method for AC:DC operation, and says about the project:
- The ROAD2X project is of great importance for making AC:DC operation and high-temperature electrolysis ready for commercialization. When the project is completed, it will open up new possibilities for electrolyzing CO2 and producing, for example, green methanol.
The project partners include Dynelectro and the established Finnish-Estonian electrolysis company Elcogen, with Aalborg University and DTU - Technical University of Denmark contributing as partners with advanced testing capacity to the project, while the company European Energy is responsible for an analysis of the business potential in the use of high-temperature electrolysis for the production of green methanol.
