Ruminations on what lies ahead this year and beyond. As we look ahead to 2024 and beyond, I think we’ll see tremendous growth in AI auditing and accountability. We have a need to understand the ‘intelligence’ part of AI, and that will come through auditing mechanisms and assuring accountability for AI systems. Their behavior will have to align with ethical and legal standards, including efforts to create tools and frameworks for assessing the impact of AI on privacy.

I have seen history repeating quite a number of times during my journey as a technologist. Using the example of cybersecurity/privacy, a problem we have been dealing with as a nation for decades and counting, where we now have 12 different state privacy laws and different data breach notification requirements in all 50 states.
