So today we've got Lucy Vincent in the hot seat. Hi, Lucy is our our longest standing consultant here at White and Clayton. She started last May when the office was actually still under renovation. Lucy is our commercial and R&D specialist with her main focus being on Germany and the plant based market. You see, I want to delve a little bit deeper into the plant based market, particularly in Germany, but I'm itching to know what your favorite? Plant based product is I haven't actually tried that many plant based products and doing this job has definitely made me think more about my diet and what I'm consuming. And you know, if before this job, if you ask me about plant based, I would just think about corn Nuggets or core mints. But there's so much innovation. You know, you've got plant based fish such as salmon and tuna and the meat products now are amazing. That's ribs and steaks. But I'd say at the moment probably the Linda. Courtney sausage rolls, classic. You can't go wrong. No, to be honest, I've not been too adventurous either. I haven't really tried that many plant based products, but we went to Go Foods that early on in the year in February and we came across this business called Plant PLA NT. It's a plant based product in the Netherlands and they had crab, plant based crab. I tried it and I was just like, wow, it was actually like the real thing. Yeah, because I think sometimes it's the texture and I've tried a lot of plant based burgers and the textures. Quite right. So I think as long as you've got the texture right, it almost tastes like you're eating meat or fish in that case. Yeah, I'm really eager to find out more about the plant based world over in Germany. Do you think there's companies and products to sort of to suit this target market? Yeah, well, Germanys obviously famous for, you know, it's sausages and schnitzels, but it's also become an internationally known for its plant based, you know, vegan and vegetarian products and production of plant based products grew by 17%. The game just last year. Interesting. And do you think that eating out as a vegan in Germany is easy? Do you think that that the supermarkets and restaurants are equipped for this particular group? Well, Riva, which is one of the biggest supermarkets in Germany and they actually opened the first vegan supermarket this year. So all of the products are in that are vegan. They've got over 300 different brands, over 2 1/2 thousand different products. So that's really exciting. And I expect that's probably gonna, you know, as they start to do well, they'll start to expand. Across Germany yeah for sure um Berlin as well is a hotspot it's actually known as the vegan capital of the world yeah and they've even got butcher shops now serving vegan products as well, which is quite cool yeah very. And, and in comparison to to other countries, do you think that Germany's quite ahead of the times Yeah definitely. I mean Germany's got a lot of startup companies, especially in the Berlin area as we mentioned there's also other countries like the Netherlands, Spain, France, they've got also a lot of. Up, up and coming companies. Um, but yeah, some of the companies that I'm working with in Germany at the moment, they're using different plant proteins, my celium, my celium mushroom root, Ohh, yeah, microalgae as well. So yeah, there's a lot of innovation going on. It's an exciting space. I mean, living here in the UAE, they're just so behind on vegan products. You've got friends that that really struggle to follow a vegan diet. It, it's stuff that's imported or things that cost a fortune. Waitrose yeah. So whenever I've gone to the supermarket, the only products I've noticed are Beyond Meat, which you'll see. I've heard of it, yeah. And they produce a lot of plant based like burgers and things like that. And obviously it's a lot of like dairy alternatives like oatmeal milk and soya milk and oat milk latte. Yeah. But they're just so expensive. And I mean, you know, plant based tends to be more expensive everywhere, but particularly in the UAE. Prices are very high and and do you think the price of plant based products is everywhere other than the UAE generally? Yeah. And I think that's what puts a lot of people off from buying plant based products. But interestingly enough, Burger King in Germany have reduced the prices of all their plant based products and meals so that they're actually cheaper than meat products to try and increase, you know, plant based consumption. Ohh, wow. OK, So as you're coming across different businesses, are there any particular businesses or plant based products that you're really eager to try? Yeah, there's a few. There's a company called Juicy Marbles and they've created a plant based ribs, which looks amazing. Like they look realistic ribs. Yeah, the bone in the middle. Yeah, they look amazing. So I'd love to try them. Also planted, they're quite well known in Europe. They've created a plant based steak that actually bleeds. The technology, yeah, and also review feeds, they've created a smoked salmon and I eat so much salmon. So yeah, I'd be really interested to see if you know the texture and the taste is on point. Yeah. So coming away from Germany specifically, what would you say is the most popular ingredient to make plant based products? I probably say oats and soy. Uh-huh. And what about product category then what would you say is the most developed? Plant based milk, I would say. And for someone that actually buys plant based milk, I don't think I'd ever go back to cow's milk now. I think it just tastes so much better. Yeah, oatmeal, but I absolutely love as I mentioned before, but I'm on to almond milk too. Really. Yeah. So what would you say is the most popular and and leading plant based brand? As I mentioned earlier, Beyond Meat, they're huge, the American company and their products are even out here in the USA and then in tons of dairy alternatives. I'd probably say Oatley. Yeah, from the top of my head, Quan Corner out pro probably corn's huge in the UK, yeah, not so much in Europe. So it's clear to see that you've had quite a lot of experience recruiting for plant based businesses. Are there any particular food product categories that that you currently recruiting for business wise? Yeah, I'm recruiting for a couple of pet food companies at the moment as well as ingredients companies and one confectionery company. And I'm interested to know kind of. What the markets like in terms of candidates in Germany, the most of your candidates come from specific areas, sort of what's it like for you? Yeah, So it depends on the role. Obviously, I do commercial and R&D. In terms of R&D, I work with a lot of relocating candidates, OK. And usually the companies are quite international, especially R&D departments. So they don't require, say, a German speaker. It's just someone that can speak English. And this is the beauty of working with it with international businesses, yeah. International headhunters like ourselves, we can source candidates outside of Germany that maybe local local agencies wouldn't be able to sort of source and get hold of. Yeah, exactly. I think that's a massive selling point for us. Obviously, being native English speakers, we have an advantage over, say, German recruiters. We've got such a good, you know, candidate base across Europe. And, you know, whenever I put a post up on LinkedIn, I always have candidates reaching out to me from all areas that are interested. And even if they're not. Right, right. For the role and we often get referrals. OK. And what's the hiring process like in Germany? I mean in the UK where I've had quite a lot of experience, it's quite quick. Over in America it's quick. What's it like over in Germany? It is a lot slower. I have been working on quite a lot of senior roles at the moment. But generally, you know, the interview process tends to be 3 stages and the third stage would be on site. So if if you've got a candidate that's overseas, it involves flying them over and often there's a case study. Or presentation as well involved. OK, good to this episode has gotta come to an end. Lucy, it's been great having you here. You've left me feeling really hungry and really wanting to try a plant based fillet steak. Guys, thank you very much for tuning in. Join me next time where I'll be sat with our food safety superheroes, Daniel and Gareth. Bye for now.

We love a good recruitment story. And we love seeing our work turn into great recruitment solutions. Hear below from Stacey from Summerset on the work we did for their food services roles:
"HainesAttract helped us test centralised recruitment for our food services roles, created a buzzy ad campaign, recruited to fill our high number of vacancies, and provided insights into why some roles/locations have been harder for us to fill (e.g. challenging location, length of recruitment processing time, role/roster complications). We got some great engagement and feedback from the recruitment campaign, and ultimately Haines recruited 57 staff nationwide. Hiring managers were provided great advice, feedback and resources about how best to ensure they got the right fit for the right roles, and the materials and insights provided will help us standardise best practice recruitment across our network".

I often hear candidates struggle with the "Tell me about yourself" question in interviews.
It's important to remember that this is not an invitation to recite your entire life story, but rather an opportunity to highlight your professional experience and skills.
When answering this question, focus on your relevant work experience, key accomplishments, and how they align with the job you're interviewing for. Keep it concise and tailored to the role, and don't forget to convey your enthusiasm for the opportunity. 🌟
Remember to also touch on your career goals and how they align with the company's mission and values. This will show the interviewer that you've done your research and are genuinely interested in the position.
By preparing a thoughtful and strategic response to this question, you can set the tone for a successful interview and leave a lasting impression on the hiring manager.
Good luck to all the job seekers out there! 🤞🏼
