Explosive report lays blame for Callide C blast In news that should surprise no one, the Callide coal-fired power station disaster in 2021 that plunged much of Queensland into the dark was caused by the decision to cut maintenance costs at the critical power station. It was not because it was ‘aging’ - it was a choice by the operators and owners to cut corners on what they clearly deemed a piece of sunk infrastructure not worth adequate investment: endangering not only our energy security but lives. All this, despite referring to it as a “supercritical coal-fired power station” on their website. Who owns and runs Callide? The Queensland Government through its Government Owned Corporation (GOC) CSenergy. No wonder the privately owned JV partners of Callide C (IG Power) were keen to get hold of Sean Brady’s report - and why the government fought so hard to have it suppressed.

The advertising revenue-based model for news media has been failing for some time, and these latest closures and job losses should be sending a chill through anyone who values civic society. Absent quality, independent journalism democracy suffers, extremist positions are amplified and civil debate is quashed. There is no simple answer. Overseas there have been inspiring instances of billionaire shareholders setting up endowment funds and trusts to guarantee independent not-for-profit news (Le Monde, The Philadelphia Inquirer) but these examples are hens-teeth rare. Journalists themselves are fighting the good fight, and smaller providers deserve our subscription support. But free access, to quality reporting is critical for a well-functioning democracy and in a small economy like ours here in Aotearoa this is going to take some Government intervention, and public funding. via International Tin Association Ltd LME tin price has stabilised following the reopening of the SHFE post Spring Festival, with three-month price hovering around $26,500. Speculative positions for tin have surged to 1,116 contracts net long, reaching a peak not seen since the initial speculative support over the mining suspension in Myanmar last July. Despite a recent tax policy change in Wa state, the tin mines of the Man Maw mining area remain closed. Indonesian exports are now significantly delayed with still no trading activity on either the ICDX or JFX since the turn of the year. Stellar Resources has recently received firm commitments to raise $3,200,000 via a Placement of which funds will be used to advance the world class Heemskirk #Tin Project, which is the highest-grade undeveloped tin resource in Australia and third highest globally.
