Ending Violence Against Women: It Starts with Us In light of the troubling rise in violence against women worldwide, it's time to reflect on the root causes and our role in fostering a safer, more respectful society. To a large extent, it starts and ends with men. Recent Cases: India: The 2022 annual report by the National Crime Records Bureau showed an alarming increase in reported cases of crimes against women, including domestic violence and assault. South Africa: Known as the femicide capital of the world, South Africa reported an egregious rate of intimate partner violence, with several high-profile cases in 2023 sparking nationwide protests and calls for systemic change. United States: In 2023, major cities reported a surge in assaults against women, with incidents involving public harassment and workplace violence drawing media attention and public outcry. Tips for Men to become more Responsible and Respectful: Educate Yourself and Others: Learn about the issues facing women in your community and globally. Challenge stereotypes and myths that perpetuate harm. Speak Up: Do not be silent—call out sexist jokes, comments, and behaviours. Use your voice to support and advocate for women’s rights. Practice Empathy: Try to understand the challenges women face daily and recognize that these are not just women's issues, but human issues. Encourage Equality: Support policies and practices in your workplace and community that foster gender equality. Lead by Example: Model respectful behaviour to those around you, especially younger generations. Show that masculinity is not expressed through dominance or control but through respect and equality. Every action counts. Let's commit to treating every woman with the dignity and respect they deserve, creating a ripple effect that influences generations. Together, we can build a world where safety and respect are the norms, not exceptions. It aims to rally everyone to reflect on their personal and collective roles in reducing violence against women, fostering a discourse cantered around actionable change. #StopViolenceAgainstWomen #GenderEquality #Respect #SafetyForAll #HeForShe

📌 16 DAYS OF ACTIVISM AGAINST GENDER-BASED VIOLENCE Every year, from November 25 to December 10, the world observes the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, a campaign that aims to raise awareness and mobilize action to end all forms of violence against women and girls. These dates were carefully selected to coincide with significant global milestones: November 25th marks the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, and December 10th is the Human Rights Day when, in 1948, the Universal Declaration on Human Rights was adopted. In 2008, the United Nations Secretary-General launched the campaign UNITE by 2030 to End Violence against Women, which runs parallel to the 16 Days of Activism. The goal is to create a global platform that highlights the need for gender equality and for the elimination of violence against women in all its forms, both at home and in the workplace. It serves as a powerful reminder that violence against women is not just a private issue, but a widespread social challenge that demands systemic change. The International Labour Organization (ILO) plays a critical role in setting global standards to prevent violence and harassment, including gender-based violence. The efforts to combat violence against women is an ongoing struggle for the rights and dignity of every woman and man. To the men out there, you are not left behind, if you suffer any kind of violence seek help. There is no shame in ending violence. #Kumuzala madam, but noti ukumuma!!! #Time to Act Now

Violence against women and girls remains one of the most prevalent and pervasive human rights violations in the world. Globally, almost one in three women have been subjected to physical and/or sexual intimate partner violence, non-partner sexual violence, or both, at least once in their life. For at least 51,100 women in 2023, the cycle of gender-based violence ended with one final and brutal act—their murder by partners and family members. That means a woman was killed every 10 minutes. The solution lies in robust responses, holding perpetrators accountable, and accelerating action through well-resourced national strategies and increased funding to women’s rights movements. UNITE campaign draws attention to the alarming escalation of violence against women under the theme, “Every 11 Minutes, one woman is killed and “UNITE to End Violence against Women.” The goal is to create a global platform that highlights the need for gender equality and for the elimination of violence against women in all its forms, both at home and in the workplace. It serves as a powerful reminder that violence against women is not just a private issue, but a widespread social challenge that demands systemic change. See something, say something! For this year's 16 days of activism against gender based violence, we are encouraging third parties to say something when they see something. There are women in abusive and violent relations who have been battered into believing there is no one who can help them, or asking for help will make their situation worse. We encourage you all to be the voice that saves the woman near you. If you put yourself in her place, you would wish someone will come to your rescue so when you see someone in the situation, say something. #16DaysOfActivism #UNWomen #YALI16DaysOfActivism #UNFPA

The White Ribbon is the globally recognised symbol to end men’s violence against women and girls. Since the inception of the White Ribbon movement 35 years ago in Canada, the White Ribbon has become an important symbol in the fight to end gender-based violence. The sad reality is, that the majority of violence against women is perpetrated by men. Whether that is a partner, ex-partner, colleague, or stranger. White Ribbon UK recognises that not all men are violent. All men can end violence against women and girls by challenging harmful attitudes and behaviours. (https://lnkd.in/egc5_pVu) 70% of women in the UK say they have experienced sexual harassment in public. (APPG for UN Women, 2021 3 in 5 women have experienced sexual harassment, bullying or verbal abuse in the workplace. (Trade Unions Congress, 2023) This White Ribbon Day 2024, we’re encouraging men to hold themselves accountable to women and to each other, so we can affect positive behaviour change to transform harmful cultures. Gender equality is key to making this culture change happen. Gender equality is achievable if men and boys understand and assume their responsibility as allies. We can prevent violence against women and girls. #ItStartswithMen (WRD Campaign Briefing) Are you and your organisation committed to ending men's violence against women and girls, by working to foster positive culture change?
