I've reached the halfway point of The 48 Laws of Power by Robert Greene, and one principle has resonated with me the most. "Reputation: Guard it with Your Life." Every interaction can leave a lasting impression, our reputation is our most valuable asset—both personally and professionally. It's not just about what we do; it's about how we're perceived. To become a thought leader people think you just have to tell others how it’s done. But to really build authority and reputation you can’t just tell people to listen to you, you have to show people why they should listen to you. Show people how your business works. Show people how you spend your time. Show people the work and the thinking. Everyone can give good advice but true authority and reputation is built by those who back up their words by showing people what they have achieved and how they achieved it.

In my work as a business leader, my focus has been on the heart of the organization, where people and the human dynamics of our society operate. My biggest frustrations over my career have come from those in charge who operate from a short-term numbers frame of mind. They present simple diagrams they learned in a business school and use them as their “modus operando”. They bring with them a short-term numbers-based approach that treats the heart of the organization that I have come to respect at a very deep level, as something that doesn’t really matter and so, with their high-priced consultants and replacement executives, they strive out to “fix things”. I have yet to see one of these approaches succeed on a long-term level over three separate industries on a personal level, and I share with quite a few the results of this failure.

Pushing yourself to achieve Malcolm Gladwell's 10,000 hours. By refusing to listen to the lies we tell ourselves like: 🚫 I’ll do an extra workout next week. 🚫 That person will figure it out. 🚫 The latest draft is just fine.
