How does an agricultural combine operate? A big device used to harvest grains is called a combine harvester, or just a combine. It's a feat of agriculture that dramatically lowers the labour force required to harvest crops. This is a condensed explanation of how a combine harvester operates: 1) Cutting: The combine harvester has a large cutting attachment at the front called a header. This cuts the stalks of the crop just above the ground. 2) Threshing: The cut stalks are fed into a threshing mechanism. This threshes the grain by separating it from the stalks. Threshing traditionally involved beating the stalks with a mechanical device, but modern combines use a rotary threshing system. 3) Separating: Once the grain is separated from the stalks, it needs to be further cleaned. The combine uses a sieve and a fan to winnow away chaff, dust, and any remaining straw from the grain. 4) Storing: The cleaned grain is collected in a large onboard storage tank. The combine operator can then unload the grain into a truck or trailer for transport. 5) Straw management: The leftover straw after threshing can be chopped up and spread back over the field or collected in bales for use as animal bedding or mulch.
