Doing good and doing well. Most organizations still see this as an "either-or" tradeoff. Their narrative goes something like this, "We would like to do the right thing, but we have an organization to run, and its viability is our first concern." Some organizations have moved beyond that to a "both-and" view of the world, figuring out how to run the two narratives at the same time. "We do both the right thing, and we are a well-run organization." A few organizations have transcended this, simply having one narrative, within which they do many things, including doing good and doing well. I met one such leader when I gave a talk at the kickoff summit of the Teton Leadership Center. Matthew McCarthy, who had recently retired as CEO of Ben & Jerry's.
