In this Op-Ed which i wrote for the Zimbabwe Independant Newspaper, I reflect on the the role of mining companies in ensuring a secure working environment for miners. For Zimbabwe, there is a historical interaction between large-scale established mines and artisanal mining because artisanal mining is mainly taking place in the sidelines and alongside established mining operations. In recent times Zimbabwe's mining sector has been plagued with poor regulatory measures, corruption and the reality of it being a lifeline versus occupational risk.
