The Indiana Department of Workforce Development recently shared an update for the Jobs for America's Graduates program (JAG) in Indiana. It's recognized as one of the most successful in the nation with an over 97% participant graduation rate, over $23.3 million in scholarships earned by the class of 2024 and over 40,000 students served so far. Today’s college students want to see better employment value from their education. Employers likewise want access to college graduates that possess the knowledge and skills needed to succeed in their organizations. And institutions of higher education are under pressure to help address the rising skills gap. Today I will be attending my daughter Brydie’s graduation from High School. Brydie has made the most of every opportunity she’s had in learning, sport, the arts, and leadership. It has been so good to be part of the education journey of both my daughters, something I’m pleased to be able to continue in my role at The Smith Family where I see young people realise their potential when they have the support they need. That's why I want all young people to have the same opportunities as my daughters.   That’s what drives our team, supporters, and partners like The Australian Financial Review who today published our article that outlines our thinking on the future of Careers Education. We see this as an important priority in the National School Reform Agreement and we suggest that ‘our nation needs to totally rethink how we provide Careers Education in schools. We need more investment to scale up programs that are shown to be working. Schools require robust partnerships with employers to enhance students’ learning opportunities and networks. It’s not just about doing new things but also doing the right things, so initiatives must be rigorously tracked for effectiveness.’   As we say in the article, ‘2023’s Year 12 leavers have weathered the storm of COVID and its aftermath. I commend their tenacity. Now begins their next chapter, and my hope is they can all fulfil their potential, enjoy meaningful careers, and go on to live their best lives. Thus, we're encouraged by the U.S. Department of Education's new efforts to expand high-quality and affordable pathways into teaching, increase pay, and strengthen working conditions. 🔭 Yesterday, ED joined the Biden-Harris Administration’s Good Jobs Initiative, issuing a set of Good Jobs Principles for Education describing factors that comprise a more desirable teaching job. 👩🏫 Efforts like these are a big part of why we founded the Coalition to Reimagine the Teaching Role alongside Education Resource Strategies, Opportunity Culture, Teach Plus, and Arizona State University Mary Lou Fulton Teachers College. ⭐These principles are an important step toward making the teaching profession more dynamic, rewarding, collaborative, sustainable, and diverse. Yesterday was my first opportunity to attend the Illinois Education and Career Success Network annual conference. The theme - Awareness to Action - resonated throughout the day and left me feeling even more energized to create more equitable postsecondary pathways for young people. A few thoughts that are sticking with me: 1. “We’re asking students the wrong questions”. In a session focused on leveraging state frameworks like PaCE, I was validated when thinking about how important it is to put the idea of “what/who do you want to be…” in front of students versus leading advising conversations with thoughts simply about what college students want to attend. 2. “We need to shift the burden from the students to the system”. In multiple sessions, this thought came through. Simply by being a part of an unjust system means you have the proximity and power to play a role in fixing that system so that it better supports the students and families it is meant to serve. All of this has me even more excited to be a part of an organization like OneGoal that is focused on leading the movement to transform postsecondary advising and support. Onward!

They have suggested that you might want to watch the show "Beef" on Netflix before the event, but it's not necessary.   Below is an updated title and description: Title: Racial Rage, Racial Guilt: The Uses of Anger in Asian America Description: Asian Americans are conventionally described as "middle-man minorities," outside of dominant racial paradigms of white and black, adjunct to white privilege and exempt from the brunt of systemic violence directed against black people. Historical accounts of the in-betweenness of Asian Americans trace their origins to how Asian coolie labor has served to triangulate white capital and African slavery over the course of European modernity. If this is the material history of in-betweenness, what is the psychic corollary of the middle-man thesis? Through an analysis of the Netflix dark comedy series Beef, as well as case histories of our Asian American patients and students, we argue that the psychic effects of occupying a racially intermediate position implicate an unexplored terrain of racial rage and racial guilt that Asian Americans are insistently socialized to hold on behalf of others.
