The most overused term in business in 2023 “Community” When did having a mailing list, a social following or having customers automatically qualify you as a community? I’m seeing more and more companies referring to their customers/followers as their community. Here’s a quick test to determine if you have an actual community. You can ask the members of your "community" if they consider what you have built to be a community. If they say no, you don’t have a community. You have a list Building a community takes a lot of effort, time and giving back. It requires people to feel like they belong to something. Building a list doesn’t. In 2024, let’s not get the two mixed up

In #Community, you should either be intentional and prioritize growing your membership of diverse folks or stop whining about the lack of diversity in your community. How do you increase the diversity of community members? – Ask members to refer folks 1:1 to the community or share about it on social media. No, you don't need a formal referral program for this, just be nice and most people will help you. – Reach out to people in space your community aims to serve and support and invite them to join the community. Give them some FOMO – share companies members work at or names of members, with permission. – Partner with a complementary organization (or multiple) to host events (Virtual or IRL), co-produce content, etc. to show up and value to folks in other spaces that you care and are a value-add community. I wouldn’t know what to write here. So many people post and ghost. But literally wants the point? People are craving real connections here. Real connections with real humans. By commenting I create those lanes where I can: -Connect with my community -Collaborate with my community -Create relationships with my community None of this is that complicated. What does community mean to you? To me, it's about having people in your corner - people who will be your cheerleaders and supporters, knowing you've got their back too. Community is a 2-way street - it's about giving, but it's also about being willing to accept help as well, when you need it. Generally, people like to feel that they can give back or pay things forward. Nearly 3 years ago, I couldn't find a Facebook group for small business owners who work with parents, so I started my own! I knew my vision for it - a space for people to connect, collaborate and get new clients, to build their business with a support network behind them. It's now grown to over 1,800 members, with a thriving online networking membership too, but it still has that small community feeling of support and encouragement.
