CALLING ALL STARTUPS! I get a ton of messages on LinkedIn from founders who have yet to raise any money, or are in the very early stages of doing so. You contact me not because of me (hah), but because you are looking for more EXPOSURE and you want to get featured in TechCrunch. Well, here is one important suggestion for how to get those: APPLY TO TC STARTUP BATTLEFIELD. This is the iconic, annual event, which takes place on stage during TechCrunch Disrupt in San Francisco, where early-stage startups (bootstrapped to pre-Series B) pitch their companies to a panel of judges and the audience (and the wider world via livestream). And yes, we write about you, too. It's produced some truly breakthrough results: funding, customers, connections with peers... and even a TV show or two. And it's so fun. Please consider applying. Today is my birthday and we have also been rejected by YCombinator! But there’s also something insightful in the rejection email: A month ago we applied for YCombinator, the most prestigious startup accelerator worldwide, which funded startups such as Airbnb, Dropbox, Stripe… The application process can be done online: it looks straightforward, but it’s perfectly made to catch most of the red flags of an early-stage startup: “Why did you pick this idea to work on?” ➡ Oh well, you might say or “The sector looks promising”, but what they actually mean is “Are you uniquely positioned to tackle this problem? Is the founding team strong enough? “What do you understand about your business that your competitors don’t?” ➡ Imagine your ultimate competitor is a billion-dollar giant. If you are a small startup, you are not fighting against it. You are fighting against a small team (within this competitor) which is responsible for a specific project. You just want to beat them at one single thing. But you better do it much better. ➡ And that’s exactly what YCombinator wants to hear from you, rephrased as “What is the giant competitor missing out on and how would you fill the gap?” At the time, we had been working on inlook.ai for no more than 8 weeks, so we really needed to show something even if the product was far from finished and, maybe, we had no perfect answer to all the questions. We applied with: ❎ No free users ❎ No paying users ✅ Apparently our application was ranked in the top 10% among all, despite these gaps and despite the fact that we are in Europe where way fewer applications are selected. Looking online, it’s not something they tell everyone, so it’s likely true. On average 5% of companies are admitted to the interview, while about 2% are selected. Our plan: ✅ keep focusing on product and target customers. ✅ probably reapply next batch. This time we are going to have paying customers and the probabilities might turn in our favor. We are not applying to YCombinator for the funding itself. We are applying because it would help build a product people love. Nevertheless, no matter how the applications go, we will proceed independently, according to our plans. #startups

Outrunning the Joneses with a shiny new tech stack? Think again. The allure of the latest technology is undeniable. It promises efficiency, novelty, and a competitive edge. But let me drop a bombshell - Your startup doesn't need the latest tech stack to succeed. Consider this: *Success isn't synonymous with high-tech.* Often, startups get caught in the tech whirlwind. They pour resources into adopting the latest tech stack, believing it's a magic bullet. But in reality, it's a rabbit hole that diverts focus from the core - solving a problem, offering value. The most successful startups aren't necessarily the ones with the most advanced tech. They're the ones that have adapted their tech to their specific needs. They're the ones that have mastered the art of resource allocation. Remember Myspace? It had the latest tech but still couldn't survive the onslaught of Facebook, which focused on user experience and engagement. The key here is *adaptability*. The true test of a startup's prowess lies in its ability to adapt its tech stack to its evolving needs, not in chasing the latest tech trends. So, get back to the basics. Focus on your value proposition, your customer, and your mission. Use technology as a tool, not as a status symbol. Your tech stack should serve your startup, not the other way around. Do you agree?
