🚢 🚨 Breaking News: East Coast Port Strike Alert🚨 🛳 If you haven’t heard, the port workers on the East Coast will begin a strike tomorrow October 1st due to disagreements between the dockworkers union (USMX) and a terminal operator group (ILA). TLDR: 1. Potential Strike: Thousands of dockworkers at East and Gulf Coast ports may strike, affecting ports that handle about half of U.S. container trade, potentially disrupting supply chains and increasing shipping costs. 2. Stalled Negotiations: The dispute between the USMX and the ILA revolves around wages, automation, and working conditions, with no agreement reached as the current contract nears expiration. 3. Economic Impact: A strike could cost the U.S. economy $4.5 billion to $7.5 billion weekly and disrupt key industries like auto and pharmaceuticals. 4. Government Role: The Biden administration is monitoring the situation but has not yet intervened, though a prolonged strike could increase the likelihood of government involvement. 5. Company Preparations: Companies have already adjusted by moving goods early or shifting shipments to mitigate potential impacts. https://lnkd.in/eWB6q8E2 #FreightBroker #TruckingLife #Logistics #SupplyChain #FreightForwarding #Transportation #TruckingIndustry #TruckDrivers #LogisticsSolutions #Shipping #FreightSolutions #LogisticsManagement #LTL #Intermodal #TruckingCompany

USMX Chairman Dave Adam met with Acting Labor Secretary Julie Su, Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, and Biden economic advisor Lael Brainard. The meeting follows USMX filing a charge against the International Longshoremen’s Association (ILA) for not bargaining in good faith. Things to consider if The International Longshoremen’s Association (ILA) strike on Oct. 1 without a contract. Below is an estimate of the impact of the strike, as provided by Sea-Intelligence: A one-day strike would take five days to clear. A one-week strike would cause supply chain slowdowns until mid-November. A two-week strike wouldn’t be cleared until 2025.

Urgent Update: Potential strikes are brewing for the entire East Coast and Gulf Coast ports. This poses major pressure on the ports, even on the West Coast, regardless of whether those other ports are directly negotiating terms or not. As of now, this strike is referred to as a possibility, as the contract between the International Longshoremen’s Association (ILA) and the United States Maritime Alliance (USMX) is set to expire on Monday, September 30th. A union contract is negotiated to find agreeable terms between the laborers and the companies that operate the job site. If they cannot come to an agreement, it is highly likely that this strike could occur. It is highly recommended that all freight be taken out of these facilities prior to September 30th, 2024. Additionally, it is recommended not to book any cargo that would depart after 09/30/2024. In the case that a strike does occur, it is important to note that no cargo will be available for delivery after September 30th, 2024, with an unforeseen timeline dependent on the strike length. It is especially important to note that there will be nobody at these facilities to manage and monitor refrigerated cargo. It is imperative that these shipments be picked up to avoid total losses to fresh goods. The more port congestion there is, the more the supply will dwindle, increasing the demand and the prices for ocean freight and associated services. We recommend that you move what you can before September 30th to avoid any potential issues and delays.
