In my end-of-week Supply Chain Matters commentary I pose the question: What's Up with Exploding Ocean Container Shipping Costs. The reasons are many and the pattern reflects that which occurred during the pandemic, the ability of shipping lines to take advantage or influence supply and demand imbalances along with conflicting stakeholder interests. With supply chain teams on the hook for reducing significantly higher global transportation and logistics costs this year, the answer is likely to be a frustrating conversation with CSCO's and CFO's. This is yet another reminder that global supply chains are still relatively fragile and there is a cost to that risk. I suspect many 2024 logistics budgets did not account for this possibility, except within the most sophisticated supply chain organizations.
