Are you a student or recent graduate eager to break into the design industry? Beware of a disturbing trend that's becoming all too common in our field. 🚩 The Scenario: Companies post enticing internship opportunities, flaunting key responsibilities and stipends. They know they'll attract a flood of applications. 🚩 The Bait: Once you apply, you're "shortlisted" and given an assessment. This assessment isn't just a test of your skills – it's a cleverly disguised way for them to gather free design ideas and solutions. 🚩 The Reality: You pour your heart into these tasks, hoping to secure that dream internship. But here's the kicker: often, no one gets hired. Instead, these companies cherry-pick the best ideas and designs, completing their projects without paying a dime. 🚩 The Competition Trap: This isn't limited to internships. Many "competitions" serve the same purpose – a treasure trove of free creative work from passionate designers. As a design community, we must call out these unethical practices. Students and emerging designers deserve better. Let's strive for transparency, fairness, and respect in our industry. Have you encountered such practices? Share your stories and let's raise awareness. Together, we can push for a change. 🌟

Designer, design process specialist, author and design intern whisperer | Empowering creative excellence | Igniting high-performing teams for exceptional product development
The first test printing of my book, "The Design Internship Handbook," arrived today! Would you or your professor like a free advance copy? Shoot me a message! I've come to understand that we're failing young designers. I've watched generations of graduates flail, making the shift from receiving academic enrichment to delivering outcomes. So I wrote a friendly book to help. Unlike similar books, mine provides real-world examples of what design grads will navigate as junior designers, a veritable cheat code to the unfamiliar systems of the world they're soon to enter. #fashionschool #internship #designcareer #professionaldevelopment

"As a designer, I value the principle that experience is a crucial source of knowledge.” Recently, I had a conversation with a colleague about job experience. She mentioned an instance where students were tasked with designing their own business cards and thinking about starting their own studios while still studying. This surprised me and got me thinking about the importance of practical experience. It's common for interns to struggle with basics, highlighting the need for more structured learning opportunities, like the mandatory internships for architecture students. I believe design students should gain at least three years of professional experience before considering starting their own practice. Working under a mentor not only provides valuable learning but also prevents potential setbacks in one's career. While starting salaries for juniors may not be ideal, rushing into independent practice without sufficient experience can be detrimental to both individuals and the design industry. I encourage aspiring designers to contribute meaningfully to our field and to prioritise honing their craft before venturing into independent practice.

I landed my dream internship 21 years ago 🙌 Then I realized that I was dreaming the wrong dream! 😳 We give a lot of praise to the people who take a chance on us that ultimately pays off, but the real heroes are the ones who believed in us even when it didn’t work out. I discovered my "dream job" in middle school after watching the movie Toy Story. The emotion, the storytelling, and the cutting-edge graphics technology completely floored me. In that moment, I knew I had to work at Pixar. Fast forward to college—I enrolled in computer science at UC San Diego, home to one of the best graphics programs in the country. Senior year, I landed a spot in Professor Mike Bailey's highly coveted graphics course. He was known for giving internships to his top students, and I worked my ass off to get my first (and only) A+ of college. And it paid off! I was invited to intern with Professor Bailey at the San Diego Supercomputer Center—a huge step toward my Pixar career. For months, I spent my time in a cold, dark room, surrounded by humming supercomputers. By the end, I had 90 seconds of footage of a teapot that looked like it was made of bricks. It was... underwhelming. I asked Professor Mike Bailey, "Is this what working at Pixar is like? When does all the fun design and storytelling happen?" He laughed and said, "Oh, that’s for the animators and writers—not for computer scientists!" That’s when it hit me. Just because Pixar makes incredible films blending technology and storytelling, doesn’t mean that’s the job for everyone working there. Eventually, I found my true calling in Product Management—a perfect balance of both worlds. But without Professor Bailey’s belief in me, I might have spent years pursuing the wrong dream. So, here’s to the Professor Baileys out there—the ones who believe in us even when things don’t go as we expected. Sometimes those are the most valuable lessons! 🙏 -------------------------- I'm commemorating my 20th yeah in my ACTUAL career, but thanking 365 people who helped me along the way. Today is Day 81 of #ZacThanks365

Operations & Finance Director at Creative Spark | Using data and curiosity to find people-focused strategies that create meaningful impact.
This is a great article from Design Week, about Junior Designers. https://lnkd.in/e6u9nag3 I am a massive believer in the importance of nurturing young talent and giving them the stepping stone they need to get a career in this industry. From a personal point of view, watching my son try to get work experience just as COVID hit, followed by lockdown GCSEs was a heartbreaking time. He’s now in his final year of college, but wasn’t offered a work experience placement - colleges are having to focus on getting attendance levels back to pre-COVID levels before being able to steer resources into other areas. Talking to him, his tutors and his fellow classmates was partly what drove me to start creating an internship programme at Creative Spark. I wanted to bridge the gap from leaving college or university and securing a Junior Designer position. We have had interns come into Spark for short periods of time, on an unpaid basis. Although this still offered an opportunity to young designers, it didn’t go far enough. I wanted to ensure we had a programme to follow, with set briefs for designers to work on, as well as giving them the chance to work on live client work, with the rest of our Studio team. Getting experience is vital. This is why I wanted to try and host more than one internship per year.. We will be giving hands-on experience to up to four people per year, in paid placements. So, it really feels like we could be doing our bit to give back and encourage new talent. Who knows, one of the interns could prove to be a world-beating talent that we decide to keep on as a Junior! Juniors can thrive in the right environment! We managed to secure Kate Rabjohns as she finished her degree at Falmouth University in 2022, and we are currently looking to get her to Midweight levels. She will gain so much experience from mentoring the interns (with help from the team) too! It's a win win for Spark! Click here to find out more about the internship programme, and how to apply https://lnkd.in/e4ekmisM
