What happens when you sit down with the very people who are in our classrooms working directly with young people? Over the past two weeks, we've been finding out—diving deep into conversations with schools and educators through focus groups and 1:1s about our YLAA events. The insights have been incredibly powerful. Listening to the voices of those who are shaping the future of our young leaders has been a reminder of the importance of keeping our ears to the ground with BOTH young people and educators. No point making something epic without involving those it’s for in the conversation. The question we've been asking is simple yet profound: How can we better support the young people in our communities? The answers have been as diverse as they are insightful, and they've reinforced our commitment to making sure our events are not just impactful but truly aligned with the needs of students and educators alike. By listening, we learn, and by learning, we can better support our young people. My recommendation is simple, stop making assumptions. No matter who your target market is, make sure their voices are heard. Don’t just guess at what they need—ask the question. Let’s move away from assumptions and start real conversations. Because when we include the right people in the dialogue, we can create something truly impactful.

A reminder that beginning May 15, we are hosting a free 3-session series: Community in the Time of Conflict, a Zoom-based community gathering space for our colleagues in higher education. We hope you can join us. Our goal in these sessions is not to teach, debate, or solve anything that is happening in the world (we wish we could!). We just want to acknowledge and help facilitate engagement in real-time between colleagues at different institutions who are knee-deep in conflict, or at the other extreme, sometimes deafening silence. The sessions will be facilitated, real-time community discussions among higher education colleagues to share experiences, emotions, and best practices. Our Community sessions are not being recorded. Join us on: - May 15, 2024, 4:00 to 5:00 pm ET | Doing the Work While Managing your Own Emotions - May 29, 2024, 4:00 to 5:00 pm ET | Personal Well-Being and Replenishment - June 11, 2024, 4:00 to 5:00 pm ET | Reflecting on Technique and Sharing Learning Join us here: https://hubs.la/Q02x0fXl0

In conversations, genuine connections are made. A new 6 word post… My school traditionally holds Student Led Conferences 2 times per year. They go like this: students prepare their best work and reflections to share with their families. On one chosen evening, families conference with their student, and teachers are on “stand by” to answer questions. It’s a longstanding and valuable tradition. Over the years, we’ve realized something was missing. We were missing an opportunity to connect. This year was the year for something new. Working with my team to find a solution, my teaching partner and I piloted a new framework. In one day, we held back to back conferences with almost every family and student in our grade. It was in these conversations that genuine connections were made. Highlights: ✨ Celebrating with a student and his mom when he showcased the first project he independently completed from start to finish this year. ✨ Hearing a student tell her mom that she wants to go to college. I was able to tell my student that, without a doubt, she will go to college. Furthermore, schools will probably pay her to go to their school. ✨ Sharing classroom and home struggles honestly and making plans to meet realistic goals. ✨ Being told time by every family how much they appreciated the time. ✨ Knowing we took a risk to change and it worked.

Tomorrow (Tuesday) we have the first of School of Human Kind's monthly 'First Tuesday Talks'. One of the founding principles of School of Human Kind is a need to rediscover the art of genuine, respectful conversation. In a world of shouting and conflict, it seems important. So each month a few of the faculty will get together to talk around a topic. Each will have a couple of minutes to introduce some ideas. Then a further couple of minutes to respond to what the others have said. Then we open it up to free dicussion and to you, our audience. It'll all be done in less than an hour. Perhaps we'll find agreement. Perhaps we'll strongly disagree. Either way, we'll explore an idea and, we hope, discover new ways of thinking about it. For this first session the topic is: 'Comparison is the thief of joy' On the panel: Angela Jamieson (Canada), Wyndham James (UK), Vreni Renggli (Switzerland) & John Britton (Ireland). We start 8pm (UK time)/12pm (Pacific Time) We'd love you to come along and contribute. Reserve your place here: https://lnkd.in/eSUaSsXb

How many educators/community advocates can truthfully say they attend conferences where they walk away with a breadth of new knowledge AND a learning community that aligns with their own practices? I am sure those are few and far between. Enter Human Restoration Project where Chris McNutt Nick Covington have created a learning atmosphere that is engaging, centered on revolutionary practice and COMMUNITY! Today was day one of their online conference and I cannot speak enough about how much I have learned. The keynotes Sawsan Jaber, PhD, NBCT and Mary Helen Immordino-Yang, EdD provided brain food to last me weeks of unpacking. Here are some of the nuggets from their sessions: Dr. Mary Helen Immordino-Yang: Solving the Frankenstein Problem 💫 emotions are a kind of thinking 💫 What are the emotions about in this class? 💫 Emotions are about the ideas 💫 learning is about human development, experiencing whole humans 💫 inventing a world we need Dr. Sawsan Jaber: Restore Humanity: Cultivating Global Citizenship 💫 stop blaming systems; know your locust of control 💫 Is curriculum a tool or a weapon? 💫 Are we not entitled to elevate the history of our ancestors and our lived experiences? 💫 Engage in equity not just act 💫 So what kind of ancestor will you be? I am excited to co-present with Trevor Aleo in our combined learning journey session. If you are not following Human Restoration Project you are missing out!
