We have achieved outstanding results in our Li-ion battery recycling process using Raw Black Mass 🔋, with high recovery rates for #Nickel (100%), #Cobalt (98.6%), #Manganese (98.4%), and #Lithium (89.1%), with potential for 100% Lithium recovery. A simple pretreatment process effectively removed impurities, boosting recovery. Our Pre-Feasibility Study is on track for completion by October, opening doors for a pilot plant and industry partnerships 🌍. ► BATTERY RECYCLING: The recycling process of lithium-ion batteries is complex and requires specialized technologies. The recycling of lithium-ion batteries begins with their collection and assessment. Subsequently, the used batteries undergo a preliminary treatment, resulting in the creation of black mass. Black mass is a mixture of metals and other substances formed through the mechanical shredding of batteries. In the next stage, a chemical process is employed to recover valuable metals such as lithium, nickel, cobalt, and manganese from the black mass. As part of the collaboration, Stena Recycling AB will handle the collection of used batteries and post-production waste, followed by the production of black mass. The black mass will then be processed at BASF’s prototype metal refinery in Schwarzheide. #technology #batteryrecycling #electricvehicles #evbatteries #lithiumion #batterymaterials

75% of all aluminium ever produced is still in use today! 🏬 🚎 🚗 Aluminium is an infinitely recyclable material - made for circularity. When cars, busses, buildings etc. reaches end of life, we can upcycle the scrap and bring this critical raw material back into the loop. Only ten months ago, Hydro and PADNOS partnered to create Alusort LLC, supplying Hydro’s Cassopolis and Henderson plants with raw material for low-carbon Hydro CIRCAL, containing at least 75% post-consumer scrap. Alusort’s HySort technology, pioneered in Europe, sorts challenging post-consumer aluminium scrap, enabling streamlined production of high-quality, low-carbon aluminium. #HydroCIRCAL #Sustainability #Recycling #Innovation #CircularEconomy https://lnkd.in/dqmf7xUK

End-of-life batteries as a resource: To bolster the supply for the electric vehicle sector, the Association of German Metal Traders and Recyclers (VDM) and the Federal Association of German Steel Recycling and Disposal Companies (BDSV) call for improved conditions for the circular economy. Key points of a new position paper include embedding recyclability in product design, harmonizing regulations, reducing bureaucracy, and increasing processing capacity for Black Mass. #rawmaterials #criticalminerals #battery #recycling

Following the inauguration of the battery recycling plant in Sweden, Stena Recycling AB has now entered a partnership with BASF regarding black mass. Black mass contains all valuable battery minerals, such as lithium, cobalt, nickel, and graphite that have been separated and collected into a black powder during the recycling process in our plant. BASF will further process and refine the black mass in its battery recycling prototype metal refinery in Germany and will produce new cathode active materials for new lithium-ion batteries. “Cooperation between industry actors will be essential for a successful green transition. With this agreement in place, we strengthen our position as one of the leading recycling partners in Europe, to both battery manufacturers and the vehicle industry,” says Marcus Martinsson, Product Area Manager Batteries at Stena Recycling Group. #circulareconomy #togetherwecreatevalue #sustainabilityforreal

In the News: Altilium Q&A with Argus Battery Materials, showing leadership in UK Battery Recycling to CAM. Great to share insights from my recent Q&A session with Thomas Kavanagh of Argus Battery Materials. Here are the key highlights: ♻️ Altilium's Role in the EV Battery Supply Chain: only company in the UK with a planned "full battery circularity model". A unique customer offering with zero-carbon transportation of batteries, processing to black mass and chemical refining to battery-ready carbon in cathode active material (CAM). ♻️ Green Processing Innovations: Altilium's propriatary EcoCathode™ battery recycling process could reduce the carbon in CAM by over 50% and cost by over 20%. Old EV batteries aren't just recycled; they're reengineered and upcycled to modern high nickel CAM, such as NMC 811 and beyond. ♻️ Only planned production of CAM in UK: ACT 4 site in Teesside will process battery waste from 150,000 EV and produce 30,000 MT of battery ready CAM, making it one of the largest projects in the European region. ♻️ Feedstock Access: Altilium is in process of developing its own shredding capacity to ensure high-quality feedstock for its refining facilities. Additionally, it has access to primary nickel MHP for imbalances in quality and quality of scrap. ♻️ Impact on Primary Battery Market: Altilium foresees a significant shift towards recycled materials in the battery supply chain next decade, with up to 50% of lithium, nickel, and cobalt coming from recycling in the UK, reducing mining and saving our natural resources. Regulatory requirements, such as minimum recycled content in new batteries, are expected to drive this transition.
