In an interview with President and CEO Mark Gresser, Charged highlights how Wildcat’s new cathode designs provide an alternative to materials produced in China. “In the near term, we will produce LFP and be one of the first US producers of a really fast-growing cathode material. Then we can use the same suite of equipment and the same process steps to produce both LMFP and our new DRX material,” Mark said. It is with the great goal of 𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗲𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘂𝗽 𝘁𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗲𝘀 and improving the reliability and competitiveness of European battery systems that, in June 2023, Flash Battery took part in the FASTEST project, together with 13 other public and private partners from 8 European countries. The core of the consortium? Developing a hybrid fast-track testing platform, to which we will contribute by providing our industrial use case. Co-operation and the integration of competences are crucial for the 𝘁𝗲𝗰𝗵𝗻𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗴𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗮𝗱𝘃𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 of the European electrification industry. For this reason, Flash Battery has been actively participating in various collaborative projects for years, in order to generate a long-term positive impact on the 𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗿𝗲 𝗘𝘂𝗿𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗮𝗻 𝗯𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘆 𝘃𝗮𝗹𝘂𝗲 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗶𝗻. Drawing insights from earlier cathode research now used in Chevrolet's #ElectricVehicles, Argonne National Laboratory researchers invented a layered oxide cathode tailored for sodium-ion #batteries. This variation on the NMC cathode is a sodium nickel-manganese-iron (NMF) oxide with a layered structure for efficient insertion and extraction of #sodium. The absence of #cobalt in the cathode formula mitigates cost, scarcity and toxicity concerns associated with that element. The team’s interest in sodium-ion batteries stems from their many advantages. Two are sustainability and cost. Sodium is far more naturally abundant and easily mined than #lithium. It is thus a fraction of the cost per kilogram and much less susceptible to price fluctuations or disruptions in the supply chain. “Our estimates suggest that a sodium-ion battery would cost one-third less than a lithium-ion one,” Johnson said. Furthermore, besides sodium, the cathode material predominantly contains #iron and #manganese. Both elements are globally abundant and not on the endangered list. Another benefit is that sodium-ion batteries can retain their charging capability at below freezing temperatures. This addresses one of the notable drawbacks of existing lithium-ion batteries. Also working in favor of sodium-ion batteries is that the technology for battery management and manufacturing already exists. OneD and Koch Modular announced today their partnership for the largest vertically-integrated plant for silicon-graphite anode materials for EV batteries. https://lnkd.in/g-YNE2tH Affordable EVs depends on the ability to lower the cost of EV batteries without decreasing the range. This can be done with the SINANODE process, by adding nano-silicon to EV-grade graphite and using less graphite in the anodes of each EV. With this partnership with Koch Modular, OneD Battery Sciences secured the only proven technology to produce silane gas for EV-grade silicon at EV-scale and meet the required target battery costs. Furthermore, the modular design allows the co-location with the production of EV-grade graphite plants already qualified by EV giga-factories in North America and in Europe, reducing the dependency on imported anode materials.
