Multi-year funding is key for small charities, it allows for strategising and stability to do the long term thinking #multiyearfunding
Grant-making contacts - do take a look at this research from Institute For Voluntary Action Research on the value of multi-year funding. The findings (that multi-year funding builds trust, provides stability, aids forwards planning, and supports learning and improvements in practice) chime closely with our own experiences at Berkeley Foundation with longer term funding partnerships of 3 years+

🌟 Check out Dr. Jade Ann Rivera’s latest article on Reel2e, promoting the Strength-Based Assessment Lab! 🌟 Learn how this innovative approach empowers twice-exceptional (2e) children by highlighting their unique strengths and talents.
Cognitive Diversity | Neurodivergence | Twice-Exceptional | Learning Disabilities | Strength-based Learning | Talent Development | Strength-based Assessments | Design Thinking | Micro-schools
Thank you, REEL2e, for publishing this piece of mine inspired by a dovetail between the thoughts of James J. Gibson on affordances, Thomas Armstrong's ideas inspired by evolutionary biology, and the quote, "Treatment is not just fixing what is broken, it is nurturing what is best within ourselves." (Seligman, 1998) From the article, "We don’t force a wild rose to become a cactus by planting it in a desert; instead, it is nurtured in conditions where it can blossom into vibrance. The same goes for our neurodivergent children’s talents and capabilities to flourish."

Designing and implementing effective approaches measuring grantmaking progress is challenging for #sciencefunders, especially since the value of their work may take years to become evident. At a knowledge exchange hosted by Science Philanthropy Alliance, funders discussed creative strategies to determine the impact of their work. These include: - Context-specific data gathering, analysis, and decision making - Integrating a wide range of perspectives in grantmaking efforts - Adopting approaches that leverage both quantitative and qualitative data Learn more about their approaches: https://lnkd.in/gzM6xh2E #Grantmaking #Science #Funders
Last fall, members joined us for the Measurement, Evaluation, and Learning shared interests group knowledge exchange in London. If you missed this event, we invite you to read about it as our Alliance Summer Reading Series continues. We helped science funders recognize and address the challenges in designing and implementing effective approaches to measuring grantmaking progress. This meeting enabled funders to develop a variety of creative approaches to determine the impact of their work. We anticipate another successful event in fall 2024!

"What is interesting to people is not proportionate to its objective importance." - Matthew Yglesias In our Global Priorities course at the University of Edinburgh's School of Economics, we delved into an insightful interview featuring journalist Matthew Yglesias and the CEO of GiveWell. This conversation explored the disparity between public interest and objective importance, shedding light on how society perceives issues. The interview, which focused on GiveWell's top charities and latest research, provided valuable insights into effectively addressing pressing global issues. Specifically, it examined the process of gathering evidence and data to determine the tractability of different charities or issues. The discussion emphasized the importance of asking critical questions before implementing campaigns or interventions, highlighting the need for thorough understanding and analysis. 1. What problem am I solving and how does it work? 2. What am I solving? 3. What do I know about the topic? This interview is a must-read/watch for anyone passionate about learning how effective change can be made practically. From more than two decades of research in this area, it’s clear that the evidence in favour of unrestricted or restricted funding must factor in circumstances and for whom. But it does make it clear that the status quo – of restricted funding as the dominant model – rests on very shaky foundations. Ben Cairns, Institute For Voluntary Action Research, bangs the drum for unrestricted funding in our latest Opinion piece. On the fence with restricted vs unrestricted funding? Let us know why! https://bit.ly/3UJ6Tbx

Systems change innovator and advocate. Co-creating practical ways to make non-profit funding equitable and locally led.
A very clear article with great links that assembles arguments and evidence for why unrestricted funding is the best way to fund. And in the rare cases when it’s not, that funders must then provide full cost recovery. Please share it with funders and their boards. This is funders talking to other funders and they need to listen to each other. #ShiftThePower #FairFunding #transformation
