Grande Island’s unique reefs, made up of plate corals, massive to sub-massive forms, and encrusting corals, are home to over 100 reef fish species, stingrays, and occasionally sea turtles. Unlike a typical coral reef, this unique, lesser-known habitat is known as an "urban reef” due to its proximity to urban coastlines and exposure to high anthropogenic stress. Unmanaged and unregulated coastal tourism and commercial activities result in engine oil seepage, debris, plastic waste, and noise pollution that add further stress on Grande Island’s ecosystem.
