But there's hope! 🌏🦘 Citizen conservation initiatives, like our Nature Blocks initiative partnered with the Bupa Foundation, are creating wildlife habitat corridors right in the heart of our cities. These initiatives align with the Australian government's Strategy for Nature 2019-2030 and contribute towards many of the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals. Biodiversity knowledge is vital for sustainable fisheries, conservation, and community resilience in Uganda. For key water bodies like Lake Victoria, the Nile River, and surrounding wetlands, our understanding is limited by the information we can access. In 1988, nearly 100 native fish species from Lake Victoria were listed in the World Conservation Union’s Red Book of endangered species. Yet today, 9 out of 10 Ugandan adults cannot name even five of these species. With over 8 million children currently in primary schools, education presents a powerful opportunity to foster a generation knowledgeable about aquatic resources. We're developing a resource to equip school-going children with essential aquatic knowledge. Right now, Congress is considering the U.S. Foundation for International Conservation Act, federal legislation which would boost conservation worldwide and be a win-win for nature, wildlife and communities. Here’s why:   🐘 Scientists estimate we could lose half of all species by 2050 unless we act now. By conserving and restoring the habitats that species call home, this legislation would protect threatened plants and animals.   🤝 $100 million every year would go towards supporting local communities and Indigenous Peoples around the world who manage protected and conserved areas helping to bridge a longstanding gap in international conservation funding. 🏛️ This bill would stretch government dollars even further by incentivizing millions in private and philanthropic funding, because solving the habitat and species loss crises will require everyone.   🌎 Evidence shows that political stability depends on the stability of the natural world. Did you know? Africa is home to almost 30% of the world’s biodiversity and a third of the planet’s fresh water. Wildlife Rangers working in protected areas manage large tracts of these natural resources, while monitoring and protecting wild animals that live there. Their work is difficult and dangerous, but crucial to preventing threats like poaching. In an IUCN report, 88.6% of Rangers in Africa stated they had faced a life-threatening situation at work. It’s estimated that every week, about two Rangers die in the line of duty—that’s about 100 every year. Without Rangers there would be no hope for critically endangered species in their natural habitats. Unless the role of African Rangers is valued and recognised by the international community, ambitious global conservation targets (such as the 30×30 commitment), and governance and equity goals cannot be fulfilled.
