Yet, these vital ecosystems are under threat of extinction: if we don’t act now, 90% of the world’s coral reefs could be gone by 2050.    The documentary broadcast on France 2 sheds light on the "Hope Reef" site located in Indonesia. Through innovative techniques like ‘Reef Stars’, hexagonal-shaped structures designed to foster coral growth, the project is transforming once-barren areas into thriving marine oasis.    💡 A few impressive numbers: 1,300,000 coral fragments outplanted, as part of the Mars coral reef restoration program  At Hope Reef, coral growth increased from 2% to 70%, fish populations have increased by 260% and there’s been a 64% rise in the number of fish species  A goal to restore 185,000 m² of coral reefs by 2029, equivalent to 148 Olympic swimming pools    🌍 A global impact: the Sheba Hope Grows™ program goes beyond Indonesia. These majestic animals are divided into two species: the common eland (Taurotragus oryx) and the giant eland (Taurotragus derbianus), with the former being more prevalent in Lake Mburo. Lake Mburo National Park, located in the western part of Uganda, spans approximately 370 square kilometers and is a haven for diverse wildlife. The park's varied habitats, including open savannahs, acacia woodlands, and wetlands, provide an ideal environment for elands. These antelopes are characterized by their large size, spiral horns, and a distinctive dewlap hanging from their necks. Elands are known for their ability to adapt to various environments and their herbivorous diet, feeding on grasses, leaves, and branches. They are generally social animals, often found in small herds, although larger groups can occasionally be seen. In Lake Mburo National Park, visitors can observe elands grazing alongside other wildlife, such as zebras, impalas, and buffaloes. The presence of elands in Lake Mburo is significant not only for biodiversity but also for eco-tourism. South Africa is proposing allowing tourists to use rhino horn powder within its borders for its claimed medicinal effects as part of a wider strategy designed to extract more economic value from the country’s wildlife. The government is also pushing a six-fold increase in the consumption of game meat, such as antelope, to R28bn (USD$1.5bn) by 2036 and a similar increase to R11.6bn of plant trade and bioprospecting, which involves the use of plants for pharmaceuticals and cosmetics. 🌿 𝐄𝐱𝐜𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐃𝐢𝐬𝐜𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐲 𝐀𝐥𝐞𝐫𝐭! 📸 I am thrilled to share some incredible news from the heart of Assam's Kaziranga National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site known for its rich biodiversity. Two elusive species, the binturong (Arctictis binturong) and the small-clawed otter (Aonyx cinereus), have been recently identified, spotlighting the untapped wilderness of this majestic park. 🐾 𝐌𝐞𝐞𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐍𝐞𝐰𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐫𝐬: 1. 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐁𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐨𝐧𝐠, also known as the bearcat, is a tree-dwelling mammal native to South and Southeast Asia. Despite its wide range, sightings are rare due to its nocturnal habits. Our own Chirantanu Saikia, a passionate tour guide and photographer from Tezpur, captured the first images of this species in the park during a routine jeep safari. 2. 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐒𝐦𝐚𝐥𝐥-𝐂𝐥𝐚𝐰𝐞𝐝 𝐎𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐫, the smallest of the otter species, extends from India across South and Southeast Asia to southern China. Arun Vignesh, the Divisional Forest Officer of Eastern Assam Wildlife, managed to photograph this playful creature, marking a significant milestone in our understanding of the region's fauna. 🌱 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐞𝐫𝐯𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐈𝐦𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞: This discovery not only highlights the ecological importance of the park but also emphasizes the necessity for ongoing endeavors in wildlife monitoring and conservation. At Cape Weligama, we're proud to support the protection of Sri Lanka's precious Purple-faced Langurs (Trachypithecus vetulus). Our conservation efforts provide a sanctuary for these endangered primates amidst  verdant landscapes of our coastal haven. The Purple-faced Langur (Trachypithecus vetulus), is a long-tailed arboreal monkey endemic to Sri Lanka and considered endangered according to the country's IUCN Red List (2015). These langurs thrive in environments with robust canopy cover, but unfortunately only a few forests in Sri Lanka can support viable populations.  Compounding this issue, the areas where they do manage to survive, such as gardens and rubber plantations, are often under private ownership. This poses a unique challenge as these human-modified landscapes are subject to rapid change due to urbanisation, agricultural expansion, and other developmental pressures. Cape Weligama is enriched with palatable plant species for langurs, including special banana gardens set aside exclusively for them. 🌱 Reforesting Zazamalala in western Madagascar: A Story of Transformation 🌍   What was once a dry, empty landscape has become a lush, green paradise full of life. This transformation is thanks to the hard work of our team and the support of people like you. 💚    🌟 2024 Highlights from Zazamalala Foundation: This summer was transformational for Zazamalala! Here’s what we achieved:  🌳 Reforestation Success: More empty, eroded land turned into vibrant young forests.  💧 Community Support: Local people gained access to new latrines, water pumps, school equipment, and medical aid.  🌞 Sustainability Boost: Solar cookers were distributed to reduce reliance on charcoal and fuelwood, protecting the forest. ADES 🌿 Wildlife Returns: we spotted new species like the beautiful Giant day gecko and the White-browed owl, and we discovered that 2 lemurs are quite common at Zazamalala, the critically endangered Giant mouse lemur and the Gray-red mouse lemur, bringing the total number of lemur species to 11! 🚶♀️ Eco-tourism Growth: Hundreds of schoolchildren and over 1,000 international tourists visited the forest and botanical garden.  🇲🇬Improved Accessibility: A new road now allows deeper exploration of the Zazamalala forest.    🌍 2025: Let’s Double the Impact! We’re not stopping here. Our ambitious goals for 2025 include:  🌳 Expanding Zazamalala Forest: Acquiring 500 hectares of degraded land to restore and create new habitats for critically endangered species.  🌱 Massive Reforestation Efforts: By January, our nursery will hold half a million seedlings across 100 tree species—an unprecedented milestone in Madagascar.  🐢 Saving Wildlife: Focused conservation of species on the brink of extinction, including the Sifaka and Flat-tail tortoise.    💚 How Can You Help?
