The Pantheon’s mystical name, which originated from Greek, means all (deriving from the Greek word pan) and gods (deriving from the Greek word theos).
In fact, the Pantheon was originally a temple dedicated to all the Roman gods; it was then sanctified in 609 AD and transformed into a basilica.
Today, the Pantheon is a significant tourist attraction, a museum and a basilica, as you can refer to it as the Basilica of St. Mary and the Martyrs.
It is a must-see attraction for several reasons, but we give you two mind-blowing to add to your list:
🌍 The Pantheon’s Dome is the most massive unsupported Dome in the world. Measuring 44.3m, it is the largest, unreinforced, spherical concrete Dome ever built.
The Dome was laid layer by layer in the same manner as the walls. Even lighter aggregates were mixed into the concrete – firstly, chunks of travertine, then pottery, and finally pumice.
☔ Visiting the Pantheon during a rainy day is a breathtaking experience. As the rainwater penetrates through the Oculus (the eye in Latin), the stunning circular opening is the only source of light inside the Pantheon, it creates a ray of light filled with droplets of rain, flowing away due to an excellent drain system located under the slanted Pantheon’s floors.
