Happy World Turtle Day! Pictured here is a Diamondback Terrapin hatchling. Diamondback Terrapins are a Massachusetts state-listed threatened species, protected under the Massachusetts Endangered Species Act. WED has proudly been involved in the restoration of multiple Diamondback Terrapin nesting sites here on Cape Cod, helping to revive sites where nesting frequency had dwindled severely. #ecologicalrestoration #worldturtleday #capecod #diamondbackterrapin

Today is World Wetland Day. Wetlands are phenomenal habitats and come in countless types (some permanent and others ephemeral). To learn more about the diversity of wetlands, check out this National Geographic Education lesson for middle and high schookers: https://lnkd.in/eqbQxQfr
“What was I made For" - from a wetland 🎶I like to flow, recharge my aquifer You draw water out but I send it downwards What was I made for You know what I’m made for Takin' a walk, marshes full of birds Sounds so alive, please don’t destroy me It’s something you’ll pay for Habitat’s what I’m made for🎶 Wetlands clean our water, help reduce flooding and erosion, and can be incredibly beautiful. They are some of the most productive ecosystems in the world, providing food, shelter and cover for thousands of species, including endangered species that can’t be seen anywhere else. Help support conservation of American wetlands by learning more about their value and celebrating our connections to them: https://ow.ly/IrT350QwTO7 #WorldWetlandsDay #WWD2024 Photo of the Yolo Bypass Wildlife Area in California by Bachir Badaoui.

In ecosystems as complex as #Louisiana's wetlands, even small variations can add up to big differences. CC&E graduate student Kevin Stoner has been working in the Big Branch Marsh National Wildlife Refuge, researching marsh restoration techniques. "Even if we can improve these projects by one or two percent, that, scaled up, would mean big differences in outcomes," he says. Today, in honor of #worldwetlandsday, we take a look at his research. Let’s talk about whales!!! 🐋 Yesterday was World Whale Day, a day of recognition for the importance of conservation efforts for whales and the acknowledgment of threats they face in the wild. Whales are a keystone species in their environments all around the world- meaning they are critically important to the function and survival of the entire ecosystem around them. Let’s talk about keystone species, why whales are so important, and the threats they face in the wild.

The power of strong partnerships, supportive leadership and a dedicated team…
In a collaborative effort with #NorfolkDistrict and the City of Virginia Beach to increase water quality and strengthen the diversity of wildlife habitat, scientists from the Virginia Institute of Marine Science transported viable eelgrass (Zostera marina) and widgeongrass (Ruppia maritima) seeds to Broad Bay, Virginia Beach for planting on Jan. 30. This action comes as part of the restorative efforts of the Lynnhaven River Basin Ecosystem Restoration Project, for more information on this project, visit https://lnkd.in/eiePypVk Over the last several decades, Submerged Aquatic Vegetation (SAV) has suffered extensive losses in many regions of the world, including the Chesapeake Bay and its many tributaries due to declines in water quality and increasing water temperatures. New research by the Arboretum and its partners highlights the urgent need to conserve threatened Mesoamerican oak tree species. With over a third not held in managed collections anywhere, and little protection of their native habitats, it's crucial to preserve these keystone species for future generations. This study serves as a vital tool for land managers, governments and conservation partners to fill knowledge gaps and protect culturally, economically and ecologically important oaks in the region. We are Guardians. We are champions of habitats. We are agents of change. We learn and we teach. We are Guardians. With knowledge, compassion and understanding, we nurture this generation and the next, working in harmony with the natural world. We are Guardians. We exist so we can all exist, together. And we will protect the house that every living thing calls home. Ahead of Endangered Species Day (May 17, 2024), we invite YOU to join us in becoming a Guardian of Wild. What are Guardians of Wild? 🌿 A strong and united group that takes action in the name of threatened species and their habitats everywhere. How can I become a Guardian? 🌿 Take action and change behaviours to improve our planet for both humans and animals. We invite you to reflect on actions you may already take or ones you can start taking to help make a difference. You too can be a Guardian of Wild. Show your support by sharing any of our sample posts found at https://lnkd.in/d-Sxz3hw about how you will commit to conservation and tag @TheTorontoZoo using #GuardiansOfWild.

Shorebirds embark on some of the longest migrations on Earth, linking habitats and people across hemispheres. However, these world travelers face serious threats from habitat loss, human disturbance and predation. As a result, shorebirds are one of the North American bird guilds undergoing the steepest population declines. Through the Atlantic Flyway Shorebird Initiative, we’re seeking proposals for conservation projects that will address threats to three focal species: American oystercatchers, red knots and whimbrels.
