Hikmatullah Abed is an Afghan Refugee who earned his Bachelor’s of Medicine and Surgery back home and was working toward his Master’s in Public Health. When he started a new life in the US, he was forced to restart his education because his credentials were no longer recognized. To compensate, Hikmatullah worked full-time night shifts to care for his wife and three children while working to obtain his US Medical License. Thanks to Wilkinson Center’s incredible partnership with Resource One Credit Union, Hikmatullah received a scholarship to continue his education. He plans to use the money to pay for his exam fees, preparatory training courses, and textbooks. We are so proud of Hikmatullah and wish him the best on his journey!

Over the course of this week, I have had the pleasure of attending the "Well-Being in Higher Education” virtual conference to discuss and raise literacy around the subject of well-being in higher education and I'd like to share a few takeaways. As a recent graduate and someone who aspires to teach in the future, I appreciated the discussion on creating sustainable change that prioritizes a holistic approach to our needs. Well-being goes beyond our physical needs and extends to the mental, emotional, and even spiritual. And like most practices, I find well-being is best practiced in a community setting. One session in particular really stood out to me. It was on the topic of creating a “culture” of well-being. We often hear that word used in professional settings. But what does it mean to create a “culture”? In my experience, culture isn’t something you create, it’s something you harness. You nurture it by creating an environment that encourages people to come together and connect which in turn builds communities. It’s within those moments of connection that we collectively begin to sense some shared feeling, experience, or understanding. 'This is what it feels like to be here, among these people. This is our culture'. It’s who we are when we are together. So how do we build a culture that promotes well-being? By providing the SPACE for such cultures to develop and focusing the purpose of those spaces on promoting well-being. Creating an environment that encourages others to engage in ways that have positive impacts, whether those be casual social events where we can enjoy time with our friends, or a quiet place for rest and focus. One example that we discussed was how we can connect people with nature by creating practical spaces that thoughtfully integrate nature into their design or functionality. Ultimately, creating a culture of well-being depends on the types of communities we aim to build and the intention we put in developing our spaces to meet the needs of our students and our communities.

The academic prowess of a child can be predicted long before the child is conceived. Learning is a science, it is a process with multiple steps. Abnormalities or distortion in any of the steps will lead to poor academic performance. It is possible to know so much but still fail an exam. It is one thing to know a thing and another thing to make another person see what you know and be on the same page with you. poor academic performance is a good enough reason to consult with your doctor. This and so much more I have written in my book. This is my contribution as a Nigerian medical doctor to develop and revive school health program to help parents/guardian, teachers and students to understand the science of learning and abnormalities, to enhance earning for everyone.

Cabinet Approves Early Childhood Care & Education Policy Cabinet has approved the Early Childhood Care and Education policy aimed at streamlining the kind of care and support that must be provided to children between 0- 6 years. Chris Baryomunsi the minister for ICT and National guidance justifies that this was based on available scientific evidence on human development giving answers to often-asked questions on when is the right age for formal learning to begin. 📢 Attention to all concerned parents! 📢 The Citizens Foundation has taken a proactive step by filing a Right to Information (RTI) application to the Education Department, Government of NCT of Delhi. We are advocating on behalf of parents facing challenges due to the delay in the admission process for the Economically Weaker Sections (EWS) category. Currently, the admission process for the EWS category has not commenced, causing distress among parents eagerly awaiting admissions for their children. We understand the importance of a timely and transparent process, especially for families relying on these admissions for their children's education. Our RTI application seeks information on the current status of the admission process, reasons for the delay, and any proposed timeline for its commencement. We believe that timely communication and intervention in this matter are crucial to ensuring fair access to education for children from economically weaker sections. We urge the Education Department to provide the requested information promptly, in accordance with the provisions of the Right to Information Act, 2005.
