“REMEMBER AND COMMIT” is the theme for this year’s World AIDS Day which marks the 35th remembrance of this event to serve as a reminder of the global struggle to end HIV-related stigma, an opportunity to honor those we have lost, and a rallying cry to commit to working toward a day when HIV is no longer a public health threat. “HIV disproportionately affects members of the LGBTQ+ communities of color, particularly cisgender Black and Latino gay and bisexual, transgender women, and Black women.” “While HIV diagnoses decreased overall and among white men who have sex with men between 2009 and 2018, new cases remained stable among Black/African-American men who have sex with men and increased among young people aged 25-34 and Latino men who have sex with men. While Blacks/African Americans make up only about 13% of the U.S. population, we accounted for 43% of HIV-related deaths in 2018.” As a result, “Researchers suggest that culturally appropriate, tailored interventions may help communities respond to the unique needs of people in—or at the intersections of—these groups.” #healthequitynow #worldaidsday #communityhealth #survivingourblackness #

February is LGBT+ History Month and this year's theme celebrates the LGBT+ community's contributions to the field of #Medicine. 🌈🔬 Arguably one of the community's biggest impacts was in the development of modern #PatientAdvocacy, a topic we discussed with Neil Bertelsen as he relayed the story of how HIV patients shaped a whole new approach to patient/regulator engagement. "What happened in those last years of the 1980s was something that we hadn’t seen before: a genuine coming together of both the medical community and the patient community, where we became hand-in-glove, basically learning at the same speed." Today, on National HIV and Aging Awareness Day, we reflect on research presented by Alexandra M. Bonnet, LMSW, and Dr. Rodolfo R. Vega, PhD with Waves Ahead at #2023USCHA. They shared that despite higher than average education and medical insurance coverage and little to no language barrier or discrimination, 264 older LGBTQ+ survey participants living with #HIV in #PuertoRico face steep gaps in other quality of life indicators, including - unmet medical needs ranging from mental health services, breast and prostate exams, pap smears, oncology, physical disability care, and gender-affirming care; - almost half living off of less than $15,000 a year; and - 1 in 5 people live in unstable housing. As people age, their social conditions, bodies, and needs change, and their services should change with them. Amplify Voices, Break Barriers: 🗣️🔗 This HIV/AIDS Commemoration let's amplify the voices often unheard. Join our campaign, empowering marginalized groups, especially women, in the fight against HIV/AIDS. The diverse participation of key stakeholders, including CSW, LGBTQ+ individuals, marginalized groups, military, police, people living with HIV, and Human Rights organizations, CARE International, created a unique platform for collective action. By engaging these diverse groups, we've amplified the discourse on the intersectionality of HIV/AIDS and gender equality. Together, we've fostered an environment of inclusivity, ensuring that the voices of marginalized groups, such as Commercial Sex Workers, LGBTQ+ individuals are heard. The military and police presence reaffirms our commitment to breaking down barriers and fostering understanding within these institutions. This commemoration serves as a beacon, inspiring continued collaboration for a gender-equal response to HIV/AIDS. In the 1980s, during the height of the HIV/AIDS epidemic, many countries imposed lifetime bans on blood donations from transgender individuals and MSM (men who have sex with men).   According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), transgender individuals are about 13 times more likely to be HIV-positive than the general adult population. For years those living with HIV were forced to cope with limited life expectancy, but now, that’s not necessarily the case. Many living with HIV go one to live long, full lives.
