Family Office Definitions. The always articulate Edward Marshall from Dentons has written an essay on what the term 'family office' means. It's becoming common to attach the word to an investment house or wealth manager but the one that sticks is the one defined in regulation: " ....a family office can only serve “family clients,” should be “wholly owned by family clients,” and should not hold itself out to the public as an “investment advisor.” Ed covers the subject subject in total, noting: * Is asset size the pre-requisite for forming an office? * ....or is it "liquid" assets that should be noted. * The scope of operation and the "function" of the office. * The objective that defines the very reason the office was established. I'm not overly sensitive these days when it comes to the nomenclature used to describe the structure you have set up to manage assets but any definition will rely on the purpose. If you're managing money outside the family and taking fees, you're a wealth or asset manager. And there is nothing wrong with that.
