Lately I've been thrilled to be pulled into economic development projects in two MA Gateway Cities that want to incorporate cooperative ownership into their strategic plans. I think the tipping point is here where enough folks know about and recognize the value of shared ownership to have a meaningful impact on future development. And guess what? The Federal Government is conducting an inquiry into the parlous state of the Australian music industry. The Yuin Folk Club, the producer of the Cobargo Folk Festival, has made a submission which can be found below (Sub Number 17). Parliamentary inquiries can be a bit hit or miss but we figure that it's worth presenting a regional community perspective. We hope that this inquiry might come out with some positive recommendations for supporting not-for-profit, community based festivals, rather than throwing more money at big international companies, driven mainly by the profit motive. We're also hoping for more direct, practical support and funding for independent Australian musicians. https://lnkd.in/djnVaCbH

Magic, much like a rare market opportunity, should be recognized for what it is and appreciated, respected and then left alone. There will always be cheap imitations to follow, but they should be seen as such.   This past weekend I tried to explain this (in part) by talking of the magic of music, its time, its place, its uniqueness. The meaning of 1969 and 500,000 people sharing a moment. The cultural significance of it all.   Here a brief excerpt of that conversation:   Me: So, you see, some things cannot be repeated. A great song, for example, can be covered, but it will always only have one author. A great concert happens only once. A great festival has only one moment in time. 15yr-old: But covers can be good. Me: Yes, they can be, as long as you remember where the song first came from. 15yr-old: But Dad, a lot of "your" music is covered by younger artists of today. Isn't that good? Me: Well, it depends, I guess. Who do you mean? 15yr-old: What about everyone from the Peanuts festival? I thought that was all considered important music. Me: (Seething, breathing, seething, breathing): Do you mean Woodstock?!?!? 15yr-old: I thought it was called Peanuts?! Me: It was Woodstock!!! JUST Woodstock!! No Charlie Brown! No Snoopy! No Linus!
