Today, we take a moment to reflect on the enduring legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and his relentless fight for justice, equality, and a more inclusive world. As Dr. King famously said, “The arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends toward justice.” At Spangler Renovations, we believe in the power of building stronger communities, not just through the work we do, but by living out values of inclusion, respect, and fairness. Dr. King’s vision of a world where every person has the opportunity to thrive resonates deeply with our commitment to creating spaces that welcome all. Today, we remember that his fight for equality wasn’t just about social change—it was about creating a better, more equitable future for everyone. As we continue our work, we strive to: -Foster inclusive workplaces and communities. -Listen to diverse voices in the industry. -Advocate for equality in every project, partnership, and relationship. Let’s honor Dr. King’s legacy by continuing the work of creating spaces, both physical and societal, where everyone has the opportunity to succeed.

Today, on Martin Luther King Jr. Day, I reflect on the extraordinary legacy of Dr. King and the work he dedicated his life to—fighting for justice, equality, and the dignity of every human being. As someone who is white, I recognize that honoring Dr. King’s legacy goes beyond celebrating his achievements. It’s about taking action to continue the work he began, confronting systemic racism, and striving to build a more equitable society. So, what can I do to honor his legacy? 1. Educate Myself: I can read Dr. King’s writings, like “Letter from Birmingham Jail,” and learn about the Civil Rights Movement. This helps me better understand the history and ongoing impact of racism. 2. Listen and Learn: I can listen to the stories, experiences, and perspectives of people of color, understanding that my role is not to speak over others, but to amplify their voices. 3. Take Action: Supporting policies and initiatives that promote racial equity, volunteering with organizations that advance civil rights, and standing up against racism in all its forms are ways I can actively contribute to change. 4. Reflect and Challenge Bias: I can examine my own biases and privilege, challenging myself to grow and work toward being an ally in the fight for justice. Dr. King once said, “The time is always right to do what is right.” Today and every day, I aim to do what is right—to honor his dream and to contribute to a world where freedom, justice, and equality truly belong to all.

While I understand the intent, I have to disagree with the language used. Martin Luther King Jr. stood for liberation, humanity, and equal rights for all. Calling someone a 'King' or a 'Felon' can lead to idolizing one and dehumanizing the other. Especially when CLEARLY we all agree that people could be wrongfully convicted of being a felon. 😬 🙃 🤔 Today, let’s honor MLK by rejecting apathy toward a system that fails us, a system where felons are barred from essential jobs but can hold the highest office. Instead of flipping the narrative, we should demand justice and equality, where the law applies equally to everyone. We don’t need a King of any kind, what we need is a healthy democracy that respects and protects the dignity of every individual. A democracy that can’t be bought and paid for by the elite. A democracy that isn’t an oligarchy in disguise. Martin Luther King Jr had a dream and today is the perfect day to reflect on his words.

Today, for the celebration of Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday, I reflect on his enduring legacy of justice, equality, and hope. Dr. King reminded us that meaningful progress doesn’t come easily; it requires vision, courage, and action rooted in compassion and collaboration. His words inspire me to strive for a life guided by balance—a balance between bold ideals and the practical steps needed to turn those dreams into reality. As I embark on this new chapter of growth and purpose, I’m embracing what I call “pragmatic progressivism.” It’s a belief in the power of intentional action—one that uplifts others, builds bridges across divides, and prioritizes sustainability and equity. Progress, to me, is not about perfection or quick fixes, but about making steady, thoughtful moves that leave the world a little better than we found it. Like Dr. King said, “Faith is taking the first step, even when you don’t see the whole staircase.” That faith fuels my commitment to justice, balance, and meaningful change. Today we must stand in two worlds, our hearts carry two seemingly opposing truths. In the spirit of Dr. King’s teachings, I remain dedicated to creating spaces where collaboration thrives, where communities are strengthened, and where no dream is too big to pursue. Together, we can embody the values of justice, compassion, and progress, building a future that reflects the highest ideals of humanity. Beloved Community!

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. believed that all people should have equal opportunity in life – whether Black or White, rich or poor. While Dr. King made unprecedented progress in fighting for this belief, we still are far away from Dr. King’s “promised land” of equality and justice for all. Today, Black and Brown families are more likely to live in poorer neighborhoods, have lower paying jobs, and have less money in their bank accounts when compared to their White counterparts. Closing the income and wealth gaps will require time and a multi-pronged approach that includes providing opportunities for better jobs and economic stability to people of color. Some of United Way's funded partners, like Charlotte Works, Habitat for Humanity of the Charlotte Region, Just Do It Movement and Urban Institute for Strengthening Families, deliver those opportunities through a range of programs focused on professional development, affordable housing and economic independence. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s dream was not just a vision of a better future; it was a call to action that challenged the very foundation of racial injustice. His dream ignited a national movement, achieving monumental victories, yet, we recognize that the fight for justice is far from over. We live in a time where racial disparities in wealth, healthcare, education, and criminal justice still endure. As we honor Dr. King’s legacy, we must ask ourselves: How will we make his dream a reality? The future of his vision is not just about progress in race relations but addressing the interconnected crises of poverty, environmental destruction, and global inequality. The fight for social justice has expanded beyond borders and challenges us to unite in the pursuit of a world where justice is not a dream but a lived reality for every person. The future is not something given to us, it is something we must create, together. #Ihaveadream
