Women make up more than 50% of law firm associates, the first time they achieved that threshold in the 32 years the National Association of Law Placement has been tracking the data. Women associates have steadily made progress in joining associate ranks over the last five years. They made up nearly 46% of associates in 2018, according to NALP. The report also shows women make up nearly 40% of all attorneys at firms in 2023, the highest percentage NALP has tracked. Walsworth once again received a Top 25 ranking in the Orange County Business Journal’s list of Women-Owned Businesses. The firm is ranked 23rd, up two spots from last year. We are also the only law firm ranked in the Top 30. Companies on the list are majority-owned by women and ranked on 2023 revenue. It’s easy to take a glass-half-empty approach when writing about women in Big Law, says Jenna Greene in her latest column. After all, the top-line statistics are depressingly familiar: Only about one in four partners are women, and those who do make partner earn on average one-third less than their male counterparts. But a new study conducted by three law professors offers another way to gauge the power of women within law firms. They looked at more than 10,000 deals at six major law firms including Cravath, Swaine & Moore LLP, Shearman & Sterling LLP and White & Case LLP, offering encouraging news about the increased prevalence of women lawyers working on notable transactions. 13 of the nation’s largest law firms now have partnerships that are more than 40% female – up from just one five years ago – as firms make steady progress towards gender equity targets. 📈 The latest data from The Australian Financial Review Law Partnership Survey – sponsored by the UNSW Law & Justice – shows 49.5% of new partner appointments were women, who now make up 35.2% of the partner cohort at the top 50 firms. Anna Sutherland, Joint Managing Partner for Disputes at Herbert Smith Freehills, said transparent promotion assessments were an important part of ensuring more women were elevated to firms’ upper echelons. Danielle Kelly, Head of Culture and Inclusion at Herbert Smith Freehills, said was set to hit full partnership parity by 2030, but the firm remains outside the 40% target set by many firms.
